Cousin: 'Ugly' Facebook responses to standoff suspect add to tragedy

OGDEN -- When Jason Valdez posted seven status updates on his Facebook page about his involvement in a standoff with the Ogden Police Department last weekend, he intended to inform just his 165 friends. But because of his liberal privacy settings, anyone could view his page and leave comments -- which resulted in tens of thousands of comments, mostly condemning the man who ended the standoff by shooting himself in the chest.

ICE nets 25 arrests in Utah, thousands nationwide

OGDEN -- A weeklong national operation led to the arrest of 2,400 illegal immigrants and fugitives, Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced Tuesday.

Officials said 25 of those arrests were made in Utah. One of those arrests was made in Ogden, while others were recorded in Brigham City, Logan, Magna, Orem, Pleasant Grove, Provo, Sandy and West Jordan, said Lori Hadley, ICE spokeswoman. Eleven of the arrests were recorded in Salt Lake City.

Volunteers to warn of dangers of deep Ogden River

OGDEN -- The city plans to mobilize 600 volunteers to patrol the swollen Ogden River over the next several weeks to provide flood safety information.

The volunteers will work in two-person teams with as many as 10 people walking along the Ogden River Parkway at any given time from Rainbow Gardens, 1851 Valley Drive, to Wall Avenue, city officials said Wednesday in a news release.

Crew finds suspicious powder in envelope

OGDEN -- Suspicious powder was found Tuesday in an envelope at the James V. Hansen Federal Building in downtown Ogden.

Fire department crews responded to the call around 1:30 p.m. The person who found the powder sealed it back in the original envelope and then sealed that in a second envelope to cut down on any possible contamination, said Chad Tucker, Ogden Fire Department public information officer.

Fire department crews were inside the building but did not deploy their hazardous material gear.

Herbert OKs $200,000 for flooding

In response to a request from Weber County, Gov. Gary Herbert on Tuesday authorized an additional $200,000 in emergency funding to combat local flooding, according to a news release from the governor's office.

Ogden man arrested on child pornography charges

OGDEN -- An Ogden man has been arrested after police say they found nearly 100 images of child pornography on his computer.

Logan Rasmussen, 21, was booked Friday into Weber County Jail on suspicion of eight counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, all second-degree felonies.
