Tony Schumacher is a man who would be top-fuel king, again

LOS ANGELES -- Tony Schumacher ruled the world of top-fuel drag racing for six years.

He was known as "The Sarge" not only for his U.S. Army sponsorship but because, in his father's words, "he looks like a soldier" with his crew cut and ramrod-straight posture. Schumacher was on top, setting every major record in the sport's fastest and most elite division.

Winternationals to begin NHRA racing season

LOS ANGELES -- Drag racing's best return to Pomona, Calif., this weekend to kick off their season with the NHRA Winternationals.

In the sport's two elite divisions, top fuel and funny car, the racing is expected to be just as close as when it ended at the same track, Auto Club Raceway, last November.

Fewer fans just adds to money woes of Dodgers

LOS ANGELES -- The sharp drop in attendance at Dodger Stadium this year is likely to cost the Dodgers at least $27 million in reduced ticket sales, concession and parking revenue for the 2011 season.

Based on the Dodgers' $286 million of total revenue in 2009, the most recent year for which public figures are available, this season's attendance-related declines would amount to at least a 9.4 percent drop in the Dodgers' total annual revenue.

Formula One race may be headed for Texas

Race organizers said Tuesday they're progressing with plans to bring Formula One back to the United States in 2012 with a proposed track on the outskirts of Austin, Texas, five years after the international motor racing series left the U.S.

The 3.4-mile track will be called Circuit of the Americas, or COTA, part of a $250 million complex on more than 900 acres that also would include year-round executive meeting spaces, a medical training facility, banquet hall and space for outdoor concerts, among other features.

Stock-car racing experiences shifting fortunes

LOS ANGELES -- Is a sequel in store for Ricky Bobby?

NASCAR stock-car racing might well have reached its apex on a July night in 2006, not at a superspeedway but at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

It was the movie premiere of "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," a comedy producers had greenlighted after hearing a pitch of only six words: "Will Ferrell as a NASCAR driver."

NASCAR goes around and around on changes

Kevin Harvick landed a familiar NASCAR sponsor, Budweiser, this season for the car he drives in stock-car racing's premier Sprint Cup Series.

Dodgers' Carroll prepares for a variety of roles

PHOENIX -- Jamey Carroll is seldom given to hyperbole. He answers questions in a thoughtful, measured manner, including a recent one about whether his age could be a liability this year.

"I don't feel like I'm 37, I don't feel like I play like I'm 37," the veteran utility player said. "So I just keep plugging away until something happens where I can't do it."

When and where he'll play? Now those are entirely different questions.

Grand Prix circuits get rolling on Sunday

Formula One and the Izod IndyCar Series kick off their seasons Sunday, with Formula One opening with the Australian Grand Prix and IndyCar taking to the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla.

The Formula One race at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne was supposed to be the second race on the calendar, but the opener in Bahrain scheduled for March 13 was canceled due to unrest in the Persian Gulf nation.

Second on the track, Kyle Busch is first in points standings

AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Kyle Busch lost the victory to Jeff Gordon but left Phoenix International Raceway with the championship points lead in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Busch leads his older brother Kurt Busch -- who finished eighth Sunday -- by three points, Tony Stewart and A.J. Allmendinger by 11 points and Gordon and Mark Martin by 15 points.

Kyle Busch also took the blame for starting an early race collision that ruined the day for pole-sitter Carl Edwards.

NASCAR rules get a tuneup

LOS ANGELES -- Major changes in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series' points system, the sport's Chase for the Cup title playoff and in prerace qualifying were unveiled Wednesday by NASCAR Chairman Brian France.

The changes, which were expected after NASCAR recently disclosed various proposals to racing teams, are intended to boost interest in NASCAR's premier series, make its points system easier to follow and boost the impetus on winning races.

While still among the most popular sports, NASCAR racing has seen declines in attendance and television ratings and hopes the changes help reverse the trend.

Supercross opens season

LOS ANGELES -- With two-time champions James Stewart and Chad Reed sidelined with injuries, rookie Ryan Dungey won the nation's top-tier supercross championship last year.

But Stewart and Reed are back as the new season opens Saturday night in Anaheim, and the challenge for Dungey and other riders to stay up front is again much tougher.

The Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series kicks off its 17-race schedule at Angel Stadium, and three of its first five races are in Southern California.

Trouble in New Orleans spills over into NBA

NEW ORLEANS -- It's an hour before tipoff and Chris Dubois, a diehard New Orleans Hornets fan clad in the NBA team's blue and gold jersey, sips a beer in a party zone outside the New Orleans Arena. A brass band plays nearby and, across the street, the imposing Louisiana Superdome rises 27 stories into the twilight.
