China faces conflict of law, business in iPad row

BEIJING -- Chinese officials face a choice in Apple's dispute with a local company over the iPad trademark -- side with a struggling entity that a court says owns the name or with a global brand that has created hundreds of thousands of jobs in China. Experts say that means Beijing's political priorities rather than the courts will settle the dispute if it escalates.

Boston's trek to playoff baseball starts this week

When the Boston Red Sox set their goals at the start of spring training each season, ownership, management, baseball operations and players all have a say before the club begins its trek toward October baseball and, if all goes according to plan, hopefully a World Series.

Dice-K provides shot in arm for Red Sox rotation

BOSTON -- Daisuke Matsuzaka finally returned to the Red Sox rotation Tuesday night, for the first time since June 19, after dealing with shoulder and strength problems for the majority of the season, and he put on a display of ambitious proportions.

He was efficient and effective and helped Boston to 4-1 victory over Los Angeles, tossing six scoreless innings while allowing only three hits, three walks and striking out five.

As Red Sox know, brawl can spark a struggling team

BOSTON -- Boston Bruins Hall of Famer Cam Neely spoke to a group of Red Sox prospects during the organization's Rookie Development Program last January and gave them some great advice.
"During a bench-clearing brawl, leave your purses in the dugout," he told the group of 20-somethings who had no previous knowledge of Neely's legendary NHL status.
The idea of a bench-clearing scrum in baseball seems laughable at first glance. The pitcher hits the batter. The batter charges the mound. The benches empty and the pitchers in the bullpen sprint almost hand-in-hand from the outfield before grabbing each other once they get onto the infield grass.
