Stewart back at Hangtown this weekend

James Stewart was perfect the last time he ran a full motocross season, becoming the second rider to win every race.

Since then, he's battled injuries and shifted his focus to Supercross, leaving his outdoor bike parked in the garage.

Coyotes making hockey cool in the desert again

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Westgate entertainment district is nearly empty, a few people watching their kids play in the fountains, a handful of others scattered among the tables and barstools inside the restaurants and bars.

It's like this most of the time, particularly during the day, when the only visitors are typically workers taking a break from their nearby jobs or the occasional tourist looking for Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville.

Villopoto wraps up Supercross title early

Ryan Villopoto has turned the most competitive Supercross season in decades into the biggest runaway ever.

Memphis' Murphy to take over NAU Lumberjacks

Northern Arizona has hired Memphis assistant Jack Murphy as its basketball coach.

Murphy replaces Dave Brown, who served as interim coach last season after Mike Adras abruptly left the program Dec. 9. The Lumberjacks finished 5-24 and 1-15 in the Big Sky Conference, ending the season on a school-record 16-game losing streak.

The 32-year-old Murphy spent three seasons as an assistant to Josh Pastner at Memphis after being an advance scout for the NBA's Denver Nuggets for three years.

Prior to that, Murphy worked with Pastner on Lute Olson's staff at Arizona.

Keselowski still riding Twitter high

AVONDALE, Ariz. -- When the drivers pulled to a stop after a massive fireball engulfed a safety truck and delayed the Daytona 500, Brad Keselowski reached into the pocket of his fire suit and pulled out his phone.

Trying to kill time while fire and foam covered the track, Keselowski started tweeting from his car, providing updates from the track, posting pictures, even answering questions from fans.

Dancing around the NCAA bubble

The college basketball season is winding down and it's time for the NCAA tournament selection committee to zoom in on all those RPIs, SOSs and W-Ls.

Alice Cooper gets first bobblehead

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Rocker Alice Cooper's shows include guillotines, fake blood, electric chairs, the occasional boa constrictor.

So when it comes to sports, there's no surprise which sport he loves: hockey.

Hard hits, speed, adrenaline, some real blood -- it's a perfect fit.

Villopoto in front of Supercross field again

Supercross had its most competitive start in more than 35 years, with four different winners to open the season.

Now that the West Coast swing is over, it's starting to look an awful lot like last season: Ryan Villopoto in front and everyone chasing.

Arizona comes back to beat Utah 70-61

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona's players were lackadaisical on defense, shot 3-pointers they only hoped would go in and looked like a scared team, not one playing for the Pac-12 lead.

The Wildcats pulled together to grind out a win, but it's not what coach Sean Miller was hoping from his team, particularly not this late in the season.

Nick Johnson hit a 3-pointer with just over a minute left and had 18 points, Kyle Fogg added 17 points and Arizona shook off a lackluster first half to beat Utah 70-61 on Saturday.

Dazzling duos in college hoops

The 2010-2011 college basketball season was notable for its carry-the-team individuals, players like Connecticut's Kemba Walker and Brigham Young's Jimmer Fredette putting up prodigious numbers while piling up wins.

This season, it's more of a collective effort, pairs and bands of players leading their teams.

Many of the top teams in the polls have several players sharing the load, like Kentucky, Syracuse, Duke and Missouri.

Searching for the next Jimmer

Jimmer Fredette was a gotta-see-this sensation at Brigham Young, piling up points while turning the national spotlight toward Provo.

He was so exciting, so captivating that his name became a verb, an adjective, a non-proper noun.

This season, there is no Jimmer. He's busy pulling that quick-trigger jumper for the NBA's Sacramento Kings.

In this photo taken, Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, and provided by Northern Arizona University, NAU head coach Dave Brown paces in front of the team bench during an NCAA basketball game against Arizona State University Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, in Tempe, Ariz. Brown is, at 70, the second-oldest men's basketball coach in Division I. Stepping in at Northern Arizona last month, Brown is 21 years removed from his previous coaching job and that was with a women's team.

70-year-old Brown keeping up with Lumberjacks

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Dave Brown paces along the baseline, arms crossed, a piece of paper folded the long way, into thirds, and tucked in the band of his sweats.

He moves slowly, deliberately, yet with energy in his step, his exuberance apparent in his body language and banter with the Northern Arizona players on the court.

"Wooo!" Brown shouts out after one shoots an air ball on a left-handed jump-hook. "I didn't know you had that in your game!"

Supercross season kicks off on Saturday

Ryan Villopoto bounced back from two years of injury and illness to have one of the greatest seasons in motocross history, taking home Supercross and outdoor titles, along with scoring the richest payday in the sport's history.

So what does he plan for an encore?

Well, it's not really a plan. He spent the offseason working to get himself in the best shape possible and will simply climb back on his dirt bike, see where it takes him.

The best traditions in college hoops

College football is filled with long-standing traditions, from rubbing Howard's Rock for luck at Clemson to dotting the 'i' at Ohio.

College basketball has a few of its own and some of them are, shall we say, a bit unique, including one that involves pajamas and another rolls of toilet paper.

Here are a few of the best ones we know of:

Tis the season: A guide to the 35 bowl games

Like it or not, the BCS championship game will be a rematch between LSU and Alabama.

Oklahoma State complained it should have had a shot at the top-ranked Tigers, BCS bashers had more fodder for the we-need-a-playoff debate and many fans scrunched up their noses at the thought of another field goal-kicking contest like the previous incarnation of the Game of the Century.

The good news, particularly if you're in the no-rematch camp, is that there are 34 other bowl games with some great players, great matchups and even some interesting nicknames, starting with that rascally Honey Badger in the Bayou.

Here's a rundown of some of the things to look for over the next month or so:
