Ahh, summer dreaming

We've just experienced another Independence Day, the quintessential American holiday. There are many things that make it so; the warm summer days, a long weekend, parades, picnics, fireworks, children out of school, swimming, and boating; the list is endless.

Observing how we Americans celebrate the Fourth of July we would be compelled to believe it impossible to have more enjoyment, more pure fun that we do. Even if some had to work the holiday, hopefully they found time to get into the spirit of the season.

GOP must get candidate with best credentials

Something is in the air in our nation's capitol and it's not the aroma of cherry blossoms. High profile Republicans have picked up a scent they recognize as "vulnerability." The fragrance is coming from the general area of the White House and the Senate. The smell is not distasteful, rather it's invigorating so much that potential 2012 presidential contenders are organizing and posturing to get into the fight.

Have you no decency, President Obama?

In the 30th day of Army vs. McCarthy Hearings before a Senate Committee, June 9, 1954, a verbal exchange occurred that changed history. Joseph McCarthy, senator from Wisconsin, was leading the fight to uncover communist sympathizers in America. He had been a young circuit court judge and a pilot during World War II.

When it came to ferreting out communists his "bulldog" tenacity served well. He could see communist "red" and all shades of "pink" wherever he looked in the landscape of American society. The Great Depression of the '30s had prompted some Americans to believe that communist socialism was a better system than capitalism. Many dipped their toes into the communist pool, others took the plunge.

Collective bargaining or extortion

Any bargaining situation is subject to some degree of extortion, or persuasion if you like. Each party has something the other wants and each seeks to extract something of value in order to reach an agreement or a contract.

Generally speaking, extortion is not a part of the deal and is prohibited by law. It is however, legal to try to persuade someone to come around to your point of view whether it's a selling price, wages, or other considerations. But there are various shades of persuasion.

Barbs from the Bard

Many of us were exposed to Shakespearian literature, however briefly, at some point during our education years. Even if we understood the dialogue most of us "pigeonholed" the experience in the useless information drawer along with algebraic formulas, and compound chemical chains.

The cult of victimology

Professor of linguistics, John H. McWhorter, in his new book, "Losing the Race," writes about victimhood and how a cult of victimology plays a role in racial relations.

His definition of victimology is paraphrased as, "a view to foster and nurture an unfocused brand of resentment and sense of alienation from the mainstream; not of forging solutions."

Border problems must be fixed

My "crazy cousin" Bill when asked where he thought he was going in life would respond, "to hell if I don't get a transfer." To my knowledge his behavior wouldn't have warranted such a fate but apparently he felt the need to change his ways, and did, he got his "transfer."

Freedom and education

No subject is more in need of study and understanding in this country than that of freedom.

The Constitution and fidelity

The Constitution of The United States and related documents were written to benefit the people of this country. The rights of foreigners are not addressed and are peripheral to the rights of U.S. citizens. Words used in these documents such as "We the people of the United States .." "the right of the people.." and " the right of citizens of the United States.." support that point. The Constitution addresses how the government is structured and how it performs. The "Bill of Rights" and other amendments address rights of the people.

Shoot outs in Congress

Seems we're in for a confrontation in Congress between Democrats and Republicans; better make that a trio -- the independent "Blue Dogs" will be part of this "dust-up."

Charisma can only carry a president so far

Turns out Candidate Barack Obama wasn't as charismatic as first thought. Sure there were some folks swooning, composing songs, odes, and poetry. A few even got tingles up their legs, a very few, but most people were simply doing what we so often do in presidential elections; vote in a new guy from the other party.

For Democrats to rebound, change in leadership is required

They call it "deal-making" in our nation's capital, but it's really a contract. Contracts require offer, acceptance, and consideration.

Resurrecting the Bush legacy

One of the lies told most often by the liberal wing of the Democratic Party is that of the Bush Administration's policy on torture. Critics got a lot of mileage from this and it unified the left, helping them to regain political power. Then-candidate Barack Obama rode the tide of this criticism. It was a wave that helped take him all the way to the White House.

Holiday wishes for the Obama administration

In keeping with the "Holiday Season" -- Christmas Season would be politically incorrect to some folks -- and the season of giving, I would like to offer to the Obama administration and its supporters my best wishes for a better year.

Major media adores Obama

It's a shame what happened to free speech. No, the First Amendment hasn't been repealed; we still have the constitutional right to freedom of the press, religion, speech and the right to assemble and to petition the government. The problem is with those who own, manage, manipulate, influence, gather and disseminate the news.
