Prep basketball: Trojans lock up Region 11 title with blowout

MORGAN -- The Region 11 champion Trojans breezed to an easy 72-50 win over the last place Grantsville Cowboys Wednesday night in a game that was never close.

Morgan started the evening with a 13-1 run and never looked back, leading by as many as 30 points in the first half and 35 in the second before calling off the dogs. A 15-0 Grantsville run against Morgan's subs late in the fourth quarter made the score sound more respectable than the game actually was.

Jake Miles drilled four 3-pointers and scored 17 points to lead the Trojans. Colby Skinner added 11 points off the bench, while Garret Kuns and Cameron Skinner finished with nine points apiece. Kuns led Morgan with seven rebounds, while Christian Wiscombe dished out nine assists for the Trojans, who conclude their regular season next Tuesday at Stansbury.

Girls basketball: Trojans finish perfect region slate

MORGAN -- It was a subdued celebration, but the Morgan Trojans cut down the nets on Tuesday night after knocking off Ogden 46-34 and finishing the Region 11 schedule with a perfect 12-0 record. The win marks two straight years of unblemished league play and Morgan's fourth region championship in a row.

But the Trojans (17-4 overall) weren't exactly thrilled with how their regular season ended. Numerous turnovers, too many missed layups and cold- and flu-like symptoms for half a dozen Morgan players resulted in a game that was too close for comfort. But the motivated Tigers had a lot to do with that.

"We've got some sick girls," Morgan coach Brad Matthews said. "Practice the last couple of days has been rough and some of them were having a hard time breathing. But that's still no excuse for bad passes and turnovers. Ogden had a good game plan. We got out of what we do partly because of what Ogden was doing."

Prep basketball: Trojans dig deep to down Bears

MORGAN -- Lively, energetic, passionate. All are apropos terms used to describe this year's Morgan Trojans.

Coach Jim Wiscombe has another label: blue-collar. That one might have been the most fitting on Friday night as the hard-working Trojans knocked off bitter rival Bear River 64-51 and ensured themselves the No. 1 seed from Region 11 in the upcoming state 3-A playoffs.

Prep basketball: Trojans continue push for top seed

MORGAN - After reaching the state 3-A championship game a year ago and then losing players such as Casey Evans, Jared Brooks and Dallin Schenk to graduation, it would have been natural to expect the Morgan Trojans to experience at least some drop in production.

But seven games into Region 11 play, the Trojans remain undefeated and in the driver's seat for a repeat of the region title and a No. 1 seed in next month's playoffs. Morgan (13-3 overall) maintained that position thanks to a 64-50 win over Stansbury on Wednesday night.

Girls basketball: Blazzard helps Trojans slaughter Scots

MORGAN -- If you score the first 33 points of the game, chances are pretty good you're going to win.

That's precisely what Morgan did against Ben Lomond on Tuesday night. The Scots couldn't manage a single basket until midway through the second quarter when Taylor Hughes finally hit a free throw to put the Scots on the board.

Prep basketball: Morgan tops Logan in non-region battle

MORGAN -- The Morgan Trojans won their fifth straight game Tuesday night, but it took a complete effort to overcome a very strong Logan team.

Jake Miles scored 17 points, Boston Saunders added 16 and Colby Skinner and Christian Wiscombe contributed 12 points apiece as the Trojans (11-3) knocked off the Grizzlies 68-62 in a competitive non-league battle.

Girls basketball: Trojans keep on rolling

MORGAN -- Earlier this season, the Morgan Trojans did the almost unthinkable by losing three straight games. That was nearly a month ago. Since then, the Trojans have won seven of eight, including Thursday's convincing 60-41 win over rival Bear River.

Both teams were 3-0 in Region 11 play heading into the game, but thanks to McKenzie Schenk's monster performance, the Trojans showed why they are the class of the league.

Prep basketball: Trojans take charge, drop Scots

MORGAN -- Ben Lomond was as tough as advertised, but the Morgan Trojans somehow persevered and found a way to beat the Scots, 59-51 on Wednesday night and move to 2-0 in Region 11 play.

For three quarters, the Scots controlled the tempo with a beautifully executed, but maddeningly slow pace, which was getting under the Trojans' skin. But with two minutes left in the third, the Trojans' offense came to life. Jake Miles knocked down a 3-pointer and Boston Saunders hit a pair of layups to finally put Morgan on top 36-35 at the end of the period.

Prep basketball: Trojans have little trouble with Tigers

MORGAN -- The defending Region 11 champion Morgan Trojans have picked up right where they left off.

Jake Miles and Boston Saunders each scored 23 points to lead the Trojans to an impressive 62-44 win over the Ogden Tigers in the region home opener on Wednesday night. Miles scored 12 of his points on 3-pointers -- all in the first half -- and the 6-foot-4 Saunders was too strong underneath against the smaller Tigers.

Prep basketball: Trojans exact revenge on Wasps

MORGAN -- Coach Jim Wiscombe said revenge wasn't a motivating factor, but deep down inside there must have been a sense of satisfaction.

In a rematch of last season's 3-A state championship game, the Morgan Trojans jumped out to an early lead against Wasatch on Wednesday night and held on to beat the Wasps 73-65.

Girls basketball: Trojans snap rare losing streak in rout

MORGAN -- All is right with the world again.

After an uncharacteristic three-game losing streak, the Morgan Trojans returned to their bread and butter Tuesday night: blowing teams out.

Morgan senior Kelsey Henry scored 25 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had seven steals to lead the Trojans to an easy 72-33 win over Grantsville in the Region 11 opener. Henry scored 16 of her points in the third quarter to help Morgan back to the .500 mark.

Prep basketball: Morgan loses third straight in nailbiter with Sky View

MORGAN -- It's been more than 10 years since Morgan's girls basketball team lost three games in a row. But the Trojans reached that dubious milestone Thursday night with a heartbreaking 60-59 loss to Sky View.

After losing on a 3-pointer at the buzzer to Roy on Tuesday, the Trojans dropped another close one, this time to the Bobcats when Tara Goldman hit the game-winning layup with one second left.

For the second straight game, the Trojans let a double-digit second-half lead slip away, and the Bobcats were happy to take advantage.

Prep volleyball: Jayhawks narrowly miss 1-A title game

OREM -- Bend your thumb and index finger until they're nearly touching. That's how close to the state 1-A volleyball championship game the St. Joseph Jayhawks got on Saturday. Instead, they were knocked out of the semifinals in five games by perennial power Monticello at Utah Valley University's UCCU Center.

After narrowly winning Game 1, 25-22, the Jayhawks were poised to capture Game 2 as well, leading 24-21 and needing only a single point to win the game. But the Buckaroos mounted a furious comeback, scoring four straight points to take a one-point lead. The Jayhawks then tied it at 25-25, but Monticello closed it out by scoring the next two points to win 27-25.

Prep volleyball: Trojans repeat as 3-A champions

OREM -- In the end, the Warriors had no answer for the mighty Trojans.

It was the state 3-A championship matchup nearly everyone wanted to see. Reigning champions Morgan and Snow Canyon facing off in a battle of high school volleyball superpowers. The Trojans were the defending 3-A champs, while the Warriors had won six straight -- the last five 4-A titles and a 3-A crown before that.

Prep volleyball: Jayhawks, Eagles advance to 1-A semis

OREM -- Both the expected and unexpected occurred on Friday at the 1-A state volleyball tournament at Utah Valley University's UCCU Center.

Highly favored St. Joseph, the Region 17 champs, cruised through to the semifinal round with straight-set wins over Piute and Tabiona. Nothing shocking there.
