CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- If all goes according to plan, the Carolina Panthers' next coach will be an NFL assistant who experiences the same success that Pittsburgh's Mike Tomlin has enjoyed as a head coach.
Or Sean Payton, Mike Smith and Mike McCarthy.
While John Fox's final season in Charlotte stumbled to its 2-14 conclusion, many Panthers' fans clamored for the team to go after a big-name coach, including two in particular -- former Steelers coach Bill Cowher and ex-Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden, both of whom own Super Bowl rings.
