EnergySolutions gets permission to incinerate German radioactive waste in Tennessee

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved licenses that will allow up to 1,000 tons of Germany's low-level radioactive waste to be brought here for incineration.

Zoo elephant kills handler

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The recent death of an elephant handler at the Knoxville Zoo is under scrutiny by state investigators, federal inspectors and a national zoo association.

Stephanie James, 33, died Jan. 14 of internal injuries after Edie, a 26-year-old African elephant, pushed her into the metal bars of a stall in the Stokely African Elephant Preserve barn. James and another keeper had been giving Edie and Jana, another female elephant, evening treats.

The death has drawn criticism from animal-rights advocates.

Census data promises detailed look at a changing America

The American Community Survey's five-year estimates come out Tuesday.

So what does that mean to you? Well, at least to some extent, everything.

"Collectively, the American Community Survey and census data are critical components of the nation's information infrastructure, providing data essential to our economy and our communities," Robert Groves, U.S. Census Bureau director, said in a press release.

The American Community Survey, or ACS, is not the more familiar census conducted every 10 years.
