Manny Pacquiao and trainer say boxer was distracted before last fight

Manny Pacquiao's skyrocketing popularity created chaos that no mere mortal could be expected to balance.

Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 knockouts) appeared more human than ever in his last fight, however.

Jon Jones says he ignores UFC foe Rashad Evans' head games

LOS ANGELES -- Jon Jones, the Ultimate Fighting Championship's youngest-ever champion, will defend his light-heavyweight belt for the third time Saturday in Atlanta against his former training partner and ex-UFC champion Rashad Evans.

Concerns in Sacramento over Kings' status

LOS ANGELES -- Owners of the Sacramento Kings have raised concerns about the city's ability to build a new arena complex in Sacramento by the 2015 NBA season, and a family spokesman said if those concerns aren't met the team will consider relocation again.

Now a TV analyst, Miller still a straight shooter

Reggie Miller will be a TNT analyst alongside Marv Albert and Steve Kerr for the NBA All-Star game Sunday in Orlando, Fla., with the network airing exclusive coverage of All-Star weekend starting Thursday.

The former UCLA star knows the scene well, having played in five All-Star games during a distinguished NBA career (1987-2005) spent exclusively with the Indiana Pacers.

Raised in Riverside, Calif., and currently residing in Los Angeles, Miller, 46, scored more than 25,000 points and made more than 2,500 three-point shots during a career that included several memorable playoff battles against the New York Knicks and a trip to the 2000 NBA Finals against the champion Lakers.

Our interview with Troy Aikman is the latest in a series of Q&As with prominent figures.

No exact science to scoring the sweet science, evidenced by the Pacquiao-Marquez fight

LOS ANGELES -- The boos started at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas right after the ring announcer read the scorecards and revealed that Manny Pacquiao had won a close majority decision over Juan Manuel Marquez.

The booing was understandable.

Weddle keeps his chin up during disappointing season

If the San Diego Chargers are going to make anything more of this season than a great disappointment, someone in a key position has to wise up, stiffen up and speak up.

The quarterback, Philip Rivers, has transformed from perennial All-Pro to interception machine.

The running back, Ryan Mathews, gift-wrapped the Chicago Bears a 31-20 victory with another crucial lost fumble Sunday.

One of horse racing's top trainers has a lot riding on Breeders' Cup weekend

Before the crowd swells at Churchill Downs in Kentucky for the two-day Breeders' Cup starting Friday, horse racing's star trainer Bob Baffert stood all but alone in the rain-dampened stands at Santa Anita Park last week, barking at two of his workout riders through a walkie-talkie.

"You're going too . . . fast!" Baffert ordered. "Now you're slowing too much! Pick it up! Aww!"

No significant progress seen in NBA talks

LOS ANGELES -- NBA Commissioner David Stern told reporters "the calendar is not our friend," after a lengthy negotiating session Thursday in New York with the National Basketball Players Association ended with no significant progress in their labor talks other than the promise to meet again early next week.

He made no statement about changes to the scheduled opening of training camps Oct. 3 or the NBA's first regular-season game Nov. 1.

However, Stern will be in contact with team owners Friday, and various reports said that could lead to the cancellation of the first two weeks of training camp and exhibition games.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is ready to put on a show

LAS VEGAS -- Floyd Mayweather Jr. was back in his element, smiling for the cameras, trash-talking with his opponent, holding court with reporters and generally acting like a man who believes he is the best boxer of his generation.

In the days leading up to his title bout Saturday against World Boxing Council welterweight champion Victor Ortiz, Mayweather looked relaxed and sounded supremely confident -- as if he were preparing to deliver a tutorial to a younger, less experienced fighter who had no idea what he was really in for.

"It's different on this level," Mayweather said. "He's used to ballrooms. I'm used to fighting in front of 17,000.

Dream deferred, until now, for Meruelo

LOS ANGELES -- The kid wasn't particularly big or quick, but he loved basketball and practiced hard enough to be good at it. That fall, he planned on starting for his high school team.

Until his dad pulled him aside to talk about the future.

Pacquiao, Mayweather and boxing's age-old issue

LOS ANGELES -- Manny Pacquiao smiled at the question, as many boxers before him have, flexed his right biceps and grinned in delight.

"I still feel young and strong," Pacquiao proclaimed last week.

Birthday No. 33 comes for Pacquiao on Dec. 17.

L.A. Golden Boy boxer Abner Mares ready for title shot

LOS ANGELES -- From the time Oscar De La Hoya saw Abner Mares box for Mexico in the 2004 Olympics, he was sold on the kid's potential.

On Saturday Mares aims to fulfill the hopes by becoming the first homegrown product of De La Hoya's Los Angeles-based Golden Boy Promotions to become a world champion.

Mares (21-0-1, 13 knockouts) will fight International Boxing Federation bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko (28-2, 22 KOs) in the finale of Showtime's four-fighter bantamweight tournament at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Werdum is out to prove he's no one-hit wonder

LOS ANGELES -- Fabricio Werdum had his Buster Douglas moment, and he's confident the similarities stop there.

Last June, Werdum shocked the mixed martial arts world with his upset of previously unbeaten Fedor Emelianenko -- just as Douglas had done in boxing when he knocked out then-unbeaten heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in 1990.

What Douglas found -- and couldn't handle -- is that tomorrow comes.

Ortiz is thrilled to fight Mayweather

Victor Ortiz returned to his childhood home in Garden City, Kan., to receive an award when he learned Tuesday he was officially Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s next opponent.

"It's a cool thing, because ever since I was a kid, I've said I'll be the first to defeat Mayweather, and now I'm on the doorstep of making it true," Ortiz said Wednesday in his first public comments since the Sept. 17 fight for his welterweight title was announced.

"Mayweather's quick, he's a great fighter, but I've never been that impressed with his style," Ortiz said.
