Are you compassionate or complacent?

Compassion and complacency are two qualities that are opposite each other in meaning. In other words, compassion commands and demands action while complacency requires inaction and nonchalance. October is Domestic Violence Awareness and Breast Cancer Awareness month. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out which ribbon wins the battle of the color ribbons.

Pink wins hands down and it has thrown purple "under the bus" for the last 25 years or more, so to speak. Compassion is an egalitarian quality. It is not prejudicial nor should it decide which causes to support. While BCAM is very important, and it should be supported, breast cancer awareness should not be overblown to the exclusion of DVAM.

Do pro athletes make for good husbands and fathers?

Tiger Woods' personal anthem should be the one by Sunshine Anderson, "Heard It All Before." The chorus of that song, "your lies ain't working now; look who's hurtin' now...Heard it all before, ... baby this, baby that..." People make fun of some women who are said to be groupies or gold diggers, but in reality and truth, these women need to ask themselves this most important symbolic interactive question, "would marrying a professional athlete bring me happiness over the course of my life span?'

Why do males do stupid things?

"The question I have that I know there is no answer to, is they know these (stings) are out there, why are they doing it?" says Bountiful Police Lt. Randy Pickett. Pickett, talking to the media, was referring to stings that netted a Farmington police officer and an attorney for the city of North Salt Lake.

Let us dissect this statement in order to come to a better understanding of why some members of the male gender do "stupid" things. I'm still trying to figure out why some pedophiles get caught up in Internet computer sex stings such as the infamous Dateline NBC "To Catch a Predator" series. The Bountiful police officer posed a great question that needs special attention.

Society concentrates too much on the 'physical'

Government agencies have severely cut mental health funding while advocating the Obamacare that hails health care to ensure every American may get their physical "ails" cured. In September of each year, there is an initiative to "take a loved one to the doctor." What kind of doctor? What else, a physician? Notice how closely the word "physician" is to the word "physical." The Greek root word for mentality or mind is "psych." What two types of doctors can you think of that begin with the syllable "psych?" No doubt you guessed psychologists and psychiatrists. It is no wonder that people are not breaking down the doors to "take their loved ones to the doctor" to see a psychologist or a psychiatrist.

Statistics show boyfriends, stepfathers are a threat

(UNEDITED)You can't handle the truth", shouts an angry Jack Nicholson at Tom Cruise in the movie, "A Few Good Men". Marilyn Warner, in her letter to the editor on May 27, made some exceptionally valid points. I truly believe that there are really good men (fathers, stepfathers, and mothers' boyfriends) out there. However, the world seldom hear from these men.

A challenge to take on trash

Suppose your child came home from school and said, "Mom, Johnny used a four-lettered word to express himself to the math teacher today." What kind of four-lettered words would surface in your mind? Would you think of action verbs like "work, take, bend, pick, help, or show"?

Which is better, proactive or reactive?

Child abuse in America has been going on for years, but not just in this country, but all over the world. If we are to mature together as a collective people, how long are we going to stay mired in our reactive state? Time and time again, the media, nonprofit organizations, and yes, even our campus organization, The Men of Weber, are trying so desperately to "rally the troops" to bring awareness to the very crimes that people get so upset over after a death occurs.

Bringing Back that 'Litter Bug' Awareness Feeling

Texas used to have an anti-littering slogan entitled, "Don't mess with Texas?" Well, you can take that statement in more ways than one. Texas is known for taking the death penalty very seriously. It is one of the rare states in the union where criminals are just in "awe" of that statement. Of course in this case, Texas was referring to motorists littering "mess" instead of disobeying social norms. As with budget restraints, it appears that state and local governments have all but abandoned anti-littering campaigns. Failing to keep the hammer down on litterers, they have completely gone wild in Ogden. One Ogden couple who walks two laps around the Dee Events Center every morning is just beside themselves with how people litter their beloved Weber State University campus.

The sociology of fatherhood

In the late 1960's, one of my favorite television shows was Father Knows Best starring Robert Young and Jane Wyman. Some feminists, either gender or equity, would probably say that show heralded patriarchy.

Take advantage of students' enthusiasm

When Max Weber coined the term bureaucracy, he certainly had in mind a system that was to be cohesive and consistent. How can the bureaucrats and nonprofit agencies take even fuller advantage of college students to assist them in their administration efforts?

Taking on drunken driving

Tomorrow is Super Bowl Sunday and the beer commercials are going to be buzzing during the pre-game, in-game, and post-game activities while encouraging sports fans to drink more than ever. Bud Light will be outdueling Miller Lite and Coors Lite for your intestinal attention.

A perpetrator-friendly mentality

Does it seems to you, or am I the oddball in thinking that our criminal justice system and some of our collective U.S. citizens have a perpetrator-friendly mentality?
