Primer for surviving senior year

All right, this is a message to all you high school seniors out there. Listen up!

It has already been established that high school is hard, we won't go into that too much -- just know that we all get it. But just because it is hard does not mean that life must be full of miserable woe.

Blog a reflection of yourself

We are taking the blogosphere by storm! Blogging -- the new scrapbooking, journal-writing, memory-keeping craze.

Last year, I don't remember exactly what family function I attended but afterward my uncle made a point of telling me that I could check out his pictures on his blog. What? You have a blog? I was in awe at how cool he seemed.

He mentioned that I could have a blog, if I wanted. He'd even help me set it up. Hmmm, a blog. All of a sudden I feet insanely cool and wonderfully original. A blog!

No writing is ever wasted. Whether it is your three-sentence journal entry, that note you pass in biology or the next great American novel, everything you write has some meaning and helps you find your voice as a writer.

No regret at being swept up in modern fairy tale

It's infectious, intoxicating, you can't help but be swept up in the glorious story that Kate Middleton and Prince William are living!

OK, I admit, I have allowed myself to get a bit swept up by this amazing modern fairy tale -- I can't help it. It truly is a fairy tale. I mean, honestly, I couldn't write a better love story if I tried!

I stayed up all night -- yes, all night -- to watch the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. I know that sounds crazy and being honest with myself here, it is crazy, but let me explain my logic.

Yes, now I know I can do anything I set my mind to

After months of training, the day of my half marathon had arrived.

I'm not quite sure how to describe my exact emotions but I was beyond excited. A long time ago, I wrote a goal list of things to do with my life like graduate from college, get married, watch all the Harry Potter movies without a break -- and run a half marathon.

Yet I never really thought I could do the race. I didn't think I was brave enough, strong enough or determined enough. Well, I guess it's safe to say I proved myself wrong.

The April morning dawned dreary and rainy.

Getting in shape for April's half marathon

Thirteen-point what? 13.1 to be exact. That is the number of miles I will be running on April 16.

Now, you might wonder why on earth someone would choose to run that ridiculous distance. Trust me, I was wondering the same thing about six months ago, but then my perspective changed.

Grow up; make the most of school

Unfortunately, in our generation, school isn't very popular and many students don't enjoy it. What a shame. Don't they realize what a blessing the chance of getting an education is?

Our generation is losing their work ethic and is in need of a serious wake-up call. I feel like we no longer take full responsibility for our actions, especially when it comes to recognizing the blessings of receiving an education and taking full advantage of that.

My 'obsessive stage' for staged musicals

The best feeling in the world is sitting in a dark theater as the curtain opens to reveal a brand new life, new people, new music and a new story.

I grew up on "Showtune Saturday Night" and listening to musicals before bed. I practically lived on Broadway if you know what I mean. My dad loved Broadway and show tunes, a love he instilled in his kids. My bedtime movies were "Phantom of the Opera" and "Cats." My brother and I would sing "Les Miserables" to each other while doing the dishes in the kitchen! If you get my point, I love Broadway.

Big Brothers Big Sisters: Making a big difference

Friendships changing lives.

That message is evident in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah program.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a volunteer organization where "Littles" -- children -- are paired up with "Bigs," or the volunteers. Children ranging from 6 to 18 years old are matched with older teenagers or adults and a match is formed.

Narnia an ideal spot to spend a few hours

As a Narnia lover, seated in the dim theaters, cozy with a bucket of popcorn on my lap and the movie unfolding, I felt ... at home.

You must understand I have a close relationship with Narnia: I have known it all my life. I grew up reading the books and watching the BBC movies. If there were ever a sick day and I stayed home from school (which wasn't often), the movies I would watch were Narnia.

O'Scares Time!

The nights are dark and deep come October, and teens everywhere are venturing into the Top of Utah's haunted places for the thrills and chills that only Halloween offers.

Today we present our annual TX. O'Scares awards to six fiendishly fun attractions offering the best and worst in ghoulish entertainment.

Are you scared yet? If not, read on.

Too Big for Costumes -- No

One night of the year lets kids everywhere -- even big kids -- live their dreams: Halloween!

Utah haole says aloha, Hawaii!

Four years is a long time to wait for something. On the other hand, when you wait for something that long, the prize is so much better. Trust me, I know. That's how long I have been waiting for my coveted Hawaii trip.
