Editor,As one of Kit Collin's uncles and a long-time Farr West resident, I wanted to make a few observations at a very difficult time for our family (Aug. 3, "Killed skateboarder fondly remembered"). There has been a lot of speculation about why the boys were riding on the street instead of on the sidewalk. Kit and his friend were riding on the sidewalk, for most of the way from N. Ogden on their way to Walmart. However, on the west side of the street where they were riding the sidewalk ends about a block north of where the accident occurred. They had two choices when the sidewalk ended; turn around and go back or ride along the edge of the street. They went into the street, staying near the gutter. They did not have the choice to be on the sidewalk if they were to continue to Walmart as planned. There was also no crosswalk to get to the east side of the street in that area. I'm not arguing that it was a good choice to go into the street, but simply, if they were to continue on to their destination they did not have the option of riding on the sidewalk as some have suggested.
