Hill Field Elementary School got some welcome news recently when in late June the Department of Defense announced it had approved an application by the school for approximately $600,000 in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) funds in the form of a grant.

'Can't help but look up'

A service held July 16 to rededicate the Hill Chapel had at least seven spiritual leaders of various faiths directly participating in the ceremony with Chaplain (Brig. Gen.) David Cyr, Deputy Chief of Chaplains, as keynote speaker.

The chapel, laid out in oak paneling of a light golden hue, matching pews and stained glass mosaic windows was a sharp contrast to before and Cyr noted in his remarks that just being there prompted one to look up.

"You can't help but look around and look up," he said.

Ogden Pioneer Days partnership with Hill AFB continues

Two of Team Hill's most ardent Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo supporters took up their passion for the event in much different ways.

Valerie Burke, 75th Public Affairs Community Relations chief, remembers attending the rodeo as a small girl wearing a cowgirl outfit complete with cowboy hat, gun belt, cap guns. "I attended the rodeo almost every year with different family members and friends. It was always the highlight of the summer," she said.

AADD adds program for the military through Yellow Cab, effective July 2

Airmen Against Drunk Driving will activate the Last Resort Ride Home, or LRRH program, July 2.

The program provides Airmen with a free and safe ride home using the Yellow Cab taxi company.

"This will be an option, but it should be a last resort option," said Senior Airman, Zahira Martinez, AADD program manager.

This should make it possible to use the service for more than 35 miles away from the base without fear of recrimination to get home safely.

Out of the chutes and into the thick of it

For a first sergeant who grew up in the suburbs of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, you might suppose a Texan would have seen a rodeo or two in his time. That wasn't in the cards until four years ago for Senior Master Sgt. Jay Hammond, first sergeant of the 388th Equipment Maintenance Squadron.

His first exposure to rodeo -- its sights and sounds and regalia -- came when his boss, who was a military liaison to the organizing committee, asked him to help out.

On the wings of a B-17

When one of the few still flying B-17 Flying Fortresses landed at Ogden Hinckley Airport recently, former B-17 Ball Turret Gunner Wayne Ottley took a turn in the air and brought some of his own memories of the aircraft along for the ride.

Ottley served four months in England during World War II from Dec. 1943 to April 1944. When a doctor discovered Ottley had developed a heart murmur, he was reassigned to Boise, Idaho, where he taught others the skills involved in sitting in a plexiglass and aluminum turret under the belly of the aircraft and shooting a .50 caliber gun.
