49ers might trade Alex Smith to Chiefs

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Alex Smith appears closer to leaving the 49ers next month after reports this past week linked him to the spot where many former San Francisco quarterbacks seem to end up -- Kansas City.

League sources said Monday the 49ers are not locked into a deal but that team officials have told others at the scouting combine in Indianapolis they are confident a trade will be made and they plan to have 15 picks in the April draft.

They have 11 selections with three more expected next month as compensation for losing free agents a year ago. The 15th pick ostensibly would come in a deal for Smith.

Bypassed 49ers’ QB Alex Smith impressed by Kaepernick

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The man who lost his job to Colin Kaepernick is among those most impressed by what Kaepernick has accomplished this season.

And it’s not Kaepernick’s foot speed or the zip on his passes that have been most striking, Alex Smith said Wednesday.

Barrows: Honesty could cost 49ers’ Alex Smith his job

By all accounts, the person who kept Alex Smith out of Monday’s game and set the San Francisco 49ers’ current quarterback soap opera spinning was Alex Smith.

He took nearly all of the first-team practice repetitions early in the week leading up to the Chicago Bears game. But by Saturday of that week, something wasn’t right. And he told the 49ers’ coaches and team doctors.

49ers’ QB Alex Smith feels good recovering from concussion

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Alex Smith said Wednesday he tried to "blink off" the vision problems that started to affect him in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Rams. But the San Francisco 49ers quarterback said the issues only got worse, and he soon realized he’d be of no value to his team.

"It’s tough to play quarterback without your eyes," Smith said after taking part in a noncontact practice. " ... All of a sudden, there was a bunch of things out there that I couldn’t make out. I just felt like I couldn’t help the team out there."

49ers, led by Alex Smith, join search for missing California teen

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Sierra LaMar hasn't been seen since 6 a.m. March 16, about an hour before she left her home in Morgan Hill to go to school. Police believe she was abducted as she walked to the bus stop.

Despite a legion of volunteer searchers, a well-organized campaign to find the girl and a flood of media coverage, a significant segment of Northern California hadn't heard about the missing 15-year-old until March 3

49ers said to be interested in Peyton Manning

The reason why the 49ers have yet to sign quarterback Alex Smith yet became very clear Friday when reports surfaced that the team not only has shown interest in free-agent quarterback Peyton Manning but were the first to watch him throw. ESPN reported on Friday that 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman flew to North Carolina on Tuesday to watch the 11-time Pro Bowl quarterback, who is recovering from multiple neck surgeries, throw and to give him a physical.

Harbaugh full of praise for Alex Smith

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Alex Smith ranks in the middle of the pack this season when it comes to passing yards and his 16 touchdowns are only mediocre.

But Smith's win total is as good as all but one of his competitors', and that's why he's getting one of Jim Harbaugh's votes -- and the coach's endorsement -- for the Pro Bowl. Harbaugh said Tuesday he's going to vote for Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers, New Orleans' Drew Brees and Smith.

Urban Meyer knows the psyche of 49ers quarterback Alex Smith

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Urban Meyer's words proved prescient, and they've haunted the 49ers' franchise for six years.

A few hours after the 49ers drafted Alex Smith in 2005, Meyer, Smith's head coach at Utah, predicted that Smith would be "nonfunctional" until he was entirely comfortable with an offense.

Players get smaller, but NFL teams look larger

INDIANAPOLIS -- Pass-rush skills are some of the rarest and most sought-after attributes in the National Football League Draft, and Michigan's Brandon Graham is teeming with them.
