Quality of life makes happy workers, and appeals to businesses

“You will find men who want to be carried on the shoulders of others, who think that the world owes them a living. They don’t seem to see that we must all lift together and pull together.” — Henry Ford

A common question posed by businesses considering locating in a community is, “What can you tell me about the quality of life in your city and how will our employees find it appealing?”

Companies are waking up to the benefits of a happy workforce. When a business is considering expanding or relocating, an appealing quality of life will be measured by a number of different components.

Explosion of growth means careful city planning is needed

Indecision today becomes the decision that affects the future.

Evidence of that is clearly visible in the planning of a city. Disciplined, methodical thought, followed by time-intensive labor, surround the efforts of professional city planners.

Data on business licenses sheds light on state of economy

The past five years have been a frustrating and challenging economic period for corporate America. Following the evolution of business during this era has provided interesting lessons on commerce either adapting or falling by the wayside.

The monitoring of business licensing at the municipal level provides a significant economic indicator for local city management. Businesses that have found their niche have weathered the storm, while other capital ventures have met misfortune.

Communities benefit from healthy youth recreation programs

In my world, life’s greatest lessons have been learned through a competitive nature and the belief that if failure exists, it came from people who didn’t realize how close they were to success when they gave up.

To me, it is all about focus. If you plan to win, your dedication to the game plan and your desire to be the best you can be must be channeled so that they are not affected by distractions.

New regional shopping centers strong indicator of economic recovery

“Being in this business for as long as I’ve been in it, it’s sort of like living in a town or a city before the war and then after the war and then during the reconstruction and then during the time that it sprawls out to the malls.”

— CARLY SIMON

Over the past 20 years, there has been a dynamic shift in the look and feel of the regional shopping center. This truth is emphasized with the completion of the “open-air” City Creek Center in Salt Lake City.

Government can support commercial enterprise

"We who live in free market societies believe that growth, prosperity and, ultimately, human fulfillment are created from the bottom up, not the government down. Only when the human spirit is allowed to invent and create, only when individuals are given a personal stake in deciding economic policies and benefiting from their success -- only then can societies remain economically alive, dynamic, progressive and free. Trust the people. This is the one irrefutable lesson of the entire postwar period contradicting the notion that rigid government controls are essential to economic development."

-- RONALD REAGAN

As mayor of a city, I often find myself in random conversations with those I serve as an elected official.

Proactive preparation key to community building

Daniel Burnham was an urban planner who is often referred to as the "father of American City Planning" and was the author of the first comprehensive plan for the planned growth of Chicago. He was quoted as saying; "Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men's blood and probably themselves will not be realized.

The responsible way forward for UTOPIA

Editor's note: The following column is a response to the April 21 Standard-Examiner "Our View" editorial "UTOPIA's endless pitch."

It is no secret that eight years ago Top of Utah cities Centerville, Layton, Perry, Tremonton, and Brigham City made a significant commitment to be part of a consortium of municipalities working to bring an open fiber network to the homes and businesses of their cities.
