Religion gets mentioned for polical gain

Why all the discussion lately over whether religion belongs in politics? Because some Conservative Christian (probably Compassionate, too) said Mormons don't qualify.

This is just one in a long line of events: Where was the outrage when Bush, Perry, Palin, Bachmann, Huckabee, etc., etc., were playing up their religiosity as political qualifications? The Republican National Convention has become a fundamentalist vetting party. Religion mattered very much when Obama was a "Muslim". Certainly, every Glenn Beck fan must believe that religion should be a factor in political decisions.

Wins by big business proves Obama's no socialist

OK, now that we have a health insurance reform package with no public option, no meaningful finance reform, privatization of space exploration, Mike Lee's counsel appointed as U.S. attorney, and now the debt ceiling compromise, can we please let go of "Obama's a socialist"?

Blog regarding Happy Meals contained inaccuracies

I think it important to make some clear distinctions about what the new nutrition rules are and where they originate. Michelle Obama, as first lady, has lobbied for healthier school lunches. The school lunch requirements have been codified in the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The bill reauthorized the national school lunch program, which has happened periodically since the program began. Obviously, congress voted for it. The following link has positive comments from Mike Huckabee (R-governor), Bill Frist (R-TN), and numerous church groups. The only time in history that I can remember this being a gigantic issue is when the Reagan administration did their reauthorization - ketchup was categorized as a vegetable (http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2010/12/13/president-obama-si...).

Rebel commentary writer could bootleg soda

(UNEDITED)This is a response to Chris Crowder's Soda Pop Machine complaint of Oct 7th. He implies that "right has become wrong" and "they" are taking Layton Christian Academy's soda pop machine away while simultaneously legalizing marijuana. He states that this is a plot by "some national organizations" and "no doubt, the current administration". Also, of course, "it's the end of the world". I hope this is facetious but I really can't tell from the piece. I rather suspect it isn't.

'Libertarian' not applicable to Tea Party, Glenn Beck

(UNEDITED)While I do not defend a strict Libertarian approach to politics, I find the word is being used very loosly lately. True Libertarianism allows others to behave as they will as long as they do not harm others. That would mean the owners of private property could build whatever they wanted within code restrictions, be it a mega-church and university, a mosque, or a strip club.

Consumer protection needed for identify theft victims

(UNEDITED)Let's recognize that identity theft and illegal immigration are related only tangentially. It is true that illegals have reason to be interested in stolen identities, but it is untrue that "solving" the immigration problem will eliminate identity theft.

Identity thieves work electronically and often across several jurisdictions. They are hard for law enforcement to catch. I am wholeheartedly for anything that would allow these thieves to be caught and prosecuted.

Health care reform: The Utah method

At 5 p.m. on June 22, I arrived home from work and retrieved my mail. Inside the box was an urgent alert from the Utah Pharmacist's Association about a proposed change to the Utah Pharmacy Practice Act Rules. Current rules in Utah allow no more than a 3:1 ratio for technicians to a licensed pharmacist. The proposed rule would remove that limit.
