Michael Hunt: Suicides are more trauma for NFL

It was reported that Junior Seau killed himself Wednesday the same way Dave Duerson committed suicide 15 months ago.

They both shot themselves in the chest.

NFL's motto: To boldly go wherever it darn well pleases

MILWAUKEE -- In the mid-'50s, when pro football was just beginning to get its meat hooks into the psyche and pocketbooks of the American public, the rest of the NFL owners were putting the squeeze on the Green Bay Packers to move to Milwaukee.

In response, more than 70 percent of the city of Green Bay voters who participated in a referendum approved floating $960,000 worth of bonds to build Lambeau Field.

Roughly a half-century later, Packers president and non-owner Bob Harlan went door-to-door to sell a $295 million renovation that would mostly be financed with a sales-tax bump in Brown County.

NBA is back, but what about the smaller markets?

At least once a week since the lockout began almost five months ago, somebody asked if I missed the NBA.

Well, yes and no.

Yes, because from a selfish point of view, the league is fun to watch when the game is honored, as well as a delight to cover. The players, coaches and front-office people are generally more accessible and friendlier than their counterparts in the other two big leagues. The NBA is far less rigid and paranoid than the NFL's closed society and not nearly as uptight as baseball.

Longtime rivalry between Packers and Vikings lacking spice

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The conversation topic was the perceived diminishment of the Packers-Vikings rivalry now that the Great Purple Scourge no longer has a whole bunch of players you love to hate.

But along the way, Packers defensive tackle Ryan Pickett threw a verbal curveball my way.

This time, small market can have big dreams

MILWAUKEE -- The worst thing you could've called the Brewers during a two-plus-decade stretch that spanned part of the '80s, most of the '90s and a sliver of a new millennium was, well, pick pretty much any adjective befitting a team that occasionally flirted with, and once even breached, the indignity of triple-digit losses.

The worst thing you could've called the Brewers between 2008 and now would've been one-hit wonders.

Bucks deserve another chance to try to get this thing right

MILWAUKEE -- It's an unsettlingly familiar story with the Milwaukee Bucks.

They bring in somebody who either doesn't want to be here, is a bad act or both.

Only changes can save the NBA from itself

As a service to those in the five-county Milwaukee metro area who are not keeping up with the NBA playoffs -- and I'm guessing that's just about everybody -- we're here to provide an update.

Seattle and Vancouver have been locked in a fierce Western Conference semifinal.

Uh, check that, Oklahoma City and Memphis.

Bucks remain an NBA puzzle

MILWAUKEE -- In explaining why the Milwaukee Bucks are back in their usual state of disrepair, only two questions matter:

What happened?

What next?

Brewers to push for new Cactus League digs

MESA, Ariz. -- The Chicago Cubs are nearing the end of their 32-year spring run here at venerable HoHoKam Stadium, a quaint but hopelessly outdated training site.

By February 2014, the Cubs should be in their new $100 million facility just down the road, funded by the selling of city land and a higher hotel tax. Of course, the Cubs had that kind of squeeze-play juice when they put the 100-mph upgrade-or-else heater to Mesa's temple.

Counsell a nice fit on a contending roster

PHOENIX -- With Major League Baseball's decision a few years ago to finally do something about steroids and amphetamines, another side effect, if you will, is gradually being visited upon the game.

For all the reasons you'd suspect, the players are getting younger.

Rodgers joins NFL's elite

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Hey, Aaron Rodgers, now that you've won a Super Bowl MVP, where are you going?

From here, it looks like very close to the top of that hypothetical list cherished by fantasy-league geeks and daydreaming general managers alike:

About time for the important stuff at Super Bowl

DALLAS -- So here it is, almost zero hour for Super Bowl XLV. The game plan is finished. The practicing, at least the sweaty part, is done.

All that is left now is final geeking-up of the Green Bay Packers.

And remember, you have as much experience at this as Mike McCarthy. The Packers coach has done the rah-rah thing before 80 regular-season games and six in the playoffs, but you have been in charge of exactly as many Super Bowls as McCarthy.

The Packers and The Decision

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Media Day for Super Bowl XLV did not disappoint with its typical freak-show smorgasbord.

Ross the Intern from "The Tonight Show" coaxed Packers backup lineman Jason Spitz into fracturing a Cher ditty. Some lunatic from Nickelodeon dressed as a demented superhero thankfully could not get coach Mike McCarthy's attention long enough to ask a question.

Off to the Rose Bowl to see Granddaddy

LOS ANGELES -- If we're honest -- and, let's face it, who out here is? -- the college football postseason is a lot like the Hollywood scene.

Style puts the big hurt on substance. Most of it is illusory and disposable. And whether it's a Will Ferrell production or the Meineke Car Care Bowl we're talking about, about 98 percent of it is instantly forgettable.

Baseball finds redeeming quality even with blown call

MILWAUKEE -- The top basketball plays include a lot of dunks -- so the impressionable kids who are able will spend a great deal of time above the rim. Consequently, few grow up with the necessary skills to make a midrange jumper . . . much less a free throw.
