Takuma Sato

Impressive start has Sato thinking big about Indy

INDIANAPOLIS — When Takuma Sato strolls into his garage at Indianapolis, he gets a quick glimpse into the two distinct paths that have defined these past 12 months.

There’s the wall that features front pages from two Japanese newspapers with his arms raised in victory. Back home, he’s a national hero.

A few feet away, on another wall, is a poster of team owner A.J. Foyt wearing an Indianapolis 500 winner’s ring -- a stark reminder of what happened last May and of Sato’s primary goal this month.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis 500 is getting its mojo back.

Rumors are flying, speeds are increasing and an Andretti is trying to get back to Victory Lane. Yes, it’s starting to feel like the good old days in Indy.

Te’o doing tough balancing act at NFL combine

INDIANAPOLIS — Manti Te’o walked into a crowded room of reporters Saturday, took a breath and settled in for 15 minutes of NFL scouting combine history.

Again, the former Notre Dame linebacker explained how he had been duped in the Internet romance he had with a girlfriend he never met, and again, he tried to turn the page on an embarrassing chapter by talking football. This time, he even got to see it play out on live television 12 yards away — where three muted flat-screen monitors were in direct view of Te’o.

Answers could have big impact on NFL draft stock

INDIANAPOLIS — Barkevious Mingo is ready for questions he will face this weekend in Indianapolis.

Seemingly every NFL team at the annual scouting combine will ask about his relationship with former college teammate Tyrann Mathieu and whether he ever hung out with the troubled cornerback.

Class clash still waged over Indiana tourney

LOOGOOTEE, Ind. -- Friday nights are still a special treat in Loogootee.

The dark, sunken gymnasium that seats more than 4,500 becomes the local hot spot. Here, most of the town's 2,751 residents can be found gossiping, or debating coaching moves, amid the aroma of popcorn and hot dogs. Old-timers relive "Little Loogootee's" magical 1975 run to the Indiana state title game, the one that nearly became known as the sequel to The Milan Miracle, the one they say could never be replicated under the current multi-class basketball system.

Colts win second straight

INDIANAPOLIS -- Reggie Wayne will always remember Thursday night's catch.

The man with the expiring contract caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Dan Orlovsky with 19 seconds left, giving the Colts their only lead of the game in a 19-16 victory over AFC South champion Houston 19-16.

It's the second straight win for the Colts (2-13), who will now have to fight off St. Louis and Minnesota for the No. 1 overall draft pick. Orlovsky, who played the last two seasons with Houston, also won his second straight game after losing his first nine NFL starts.

Archie Manning says son, Luck can coexist in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS -- Archie Manning figures Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck can co-exist in Indianapolis after all.

One day after Archie Manning told an Indy radio show he didn't think either quarterback wanted to be on the same team, he backtracked and said he thought the two could work together just fine -- if the winless Colts get the No. 1 pick next spring and choose Luck.

"I'm sure they could," Archie Manning said in a phone interview Wednesday. "Andrew is a great young man and we've enjoyed getting to know him. He and Peyton have a friendship, and I'm one of the few people out there that's not really concerned about this deal. All good people respect each other and I'm sure this will all shake out."

Coaches program could clean up summer basketball

INDIANAPOLIS -- Len Elmore thinks there can be better summer basketball -- without adding a single rule to the NCAA's massive manual.

He's ready to prove it.

On Monday, IHoops, the basketball consortium Elmore leads, will reveal a new online coaches' education program that encourages teaching fundamentals instead of showcasing top players. All coaches competing at AAU's national championship level will be required to complete the course.
