Homework has gotten way out of hand

I look forward to summer for one reason: freedom. It's the only time I have that someone isn't dictating my every move, telling me what I should try to learn and sucking up my leisure time with how I should learn it.

Prom: Even our parents enjoyed participating

Everyone dreams about their own prom story.

We fill it with elegant, fancy dresses that glitter a rainbow under the dance lighting. We have formal tuxedos and strapping young men with silk ties all entangled in our perfect perception. We have extravagant day dates, activities and exquisite dinners. Then we finally head to the Utah State Capitol and dance the night away.

This is the picture we paint of prom but the masterpiece hasn't always looked this way.

Olympic spirit rallies with speedy trip around bobsled track

Some kids get allowances, others are paid for their grades. Most of the time, I fall in neither category.

However, thanks to the Ken Garff Keys to Success program, I recently got to do something that more than compensated for all the lost years of free cash -- winter bobsledding at the Utah Olympic Park.

The auto company's program helps motivate and acknowledge high school students in their academic achievements. When I received a Keys to Success prize from one of my teachers, I carefully evaluated all the possibilities, wary of wasting my reward.

Life with braces a lesson in discipline

All growing up I've been encouraged by my parents and other adults to endure temporary misery for what they said would be a better future.

My mother made me gag down chalk-flavored medicine as a kid, so that I would recover from my illnesses. Or she took me to be stabbed with cruel torture tools to vaccinate me for protection from disease.

Think you know this game?

As high school students, many teenagers love the excitement of the Friday Night Lights and cheering for their beloved football team. Emotions run high as students celebrate touchdowns and mourn incomplete passes.

(JENNIFER GHAN/Roy High School) Alexis Domey, a junior at Fremont High School, picked out this back-to-school shirt because it's bright and colorful.

Back to school in Fashion

Going into a new school year, teenagers have a lot to worry about -- schedules with unfamiliar teachers, huge textbooks and a shopping list. On the list of things to buy are binders, paper and pencils, not to mention clothes.

Cool Summer Jobs

Wouldn't it be great to hang out at an amusement park or sit by a pool all day -- and get paid?

Summer fun without the big bucks

The sun is blazing as you glance out the window. It is the perfect summer day to go have fun with friends. Looking in your wallet you find a few dollars and a handful of change.

(Jennifer Grann/Roy High School) Family reunions are a good time to share stories and memories.

Reunions fun? It's all relative

Hopping out of the car you carefully look left and right but make the fatal mistake of not checking the parking lot behind you. Attacking from the back is Auntie Lula, pinching your cheeks harder than at any previous get-together you remember. Next is Uncle Alex and his turn-your-hand-purple signature handshake followed by a hearty slap on the back.

You've got a friend in 'Toy Story 3'

When I first saw a preview for "Toy Story 3" my heart pounded with anticipation. I've long been a lover of Disney and Pixar animation. I enjoy the fun characters, eccentric plots and the overall feeling the films bring. Adventure and excitement are around every corner and it is absolutely thrilling to watch.

Breakfast on the go

Mornings are hard for everyone but especially for teenagers. As typical teenagers, we sleep in until the last possible moment, trying to squeeze every ounce of sleep out of our night's rest. However, we end up pushing something just as essential out of our day: breakfast.

Two years too long to wait for another inspiring Olympics

There are few things that catch my attention quite like the Olympics. It is exhilarating to watch the athletes make history doing things beyond my comprehension and it definitely beats doing math homework.

Get lost, get set for adventure

Most of us look for adventure. There's something about the thrill of the unexpected and the excitement of the chase that really cures a dull, boring life.

Appetite gross-outs

"What's that?"

Hasn't everyone asked this somewhat impolite question at least once while looking at the cafeteria food they have just been served? There is something about the weird color of the meat or the odd texture of the veggies that always seems to make us feel a lot less hungry than before.

It's not so easy being the kid of a political candidate

It's not so easy being the kid of a political candidate

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be the child of the president of the United States of America? I often do, especially when I see them on TV. What is it like going to school where everyone knows and has an opinion about your parent? Do the kids ever get time to spend with their parents? Are they always bombarded by media?
