Utah residents need to realize we're in a desert

Editor,

In regards to the article of April 18, “Colorado River tops 2013 endangered waterways list”:  In the future, we might get thirsty but we’ll have the greenest grass in the neighborhood.

Thief not deserving of 'mountain man' distinction

Editor,

I hope members of the news media were being sarcastic when they said Troy James Knapp is a mountain man and survivalist. He is so far from being a true mountain man it isn’t even funny.

Real mountain men, like Jedediah Strong Smith didn’t break into others’ cabins in order to survive in the wilderness.

People seem to have chips on their shoulders

Editor,

I took my five grandkids to the circus at the Golden Spike Arena. We were having fund and all of a sudden the woman in front of my grandson turned around and was going to grab him. I asked what was wrong and she said he was kicking the back of her seat. I apologized and she was still screaming.

She no sooner turned around, when she began screaming again that the boy on the otherside had spilled a little of his drink on her husband’s shirt!

Let's learn from others; Afghanistan's unwinnable

I had read an article in Harpers "Easy chair: A letter to Barack Obama" by George McGovern. It presents the idea of bringing home the troops from the Middle East as well as from Korea and Europe--all good and logical ideas. Do people know that in 1963, the defense budget for $51 billion? And yet, neither China nor Russia threatens us.

Others have tried and failed to work their will in Afghanistan, such as Alexander the Great, the Mongols, the British and the Russians.

Government retiree would sacrifice paycheck

I am a regular citizen of these United States and I have to live within my means. What is so different with the U.S. government? I am retired from civil service and I have it good! A lot of people don't! I am very scared for my kids' and grandkids' futures, so much, that I would be willing to forfeit a month's paycheck to go towards getting us out of the hole. Congress and the president are millionaires anyway and I'm sure they could sacrifice; but would they?
