Softball is not baseball

Both baseball and softball use a round ball, a bat and a glove. Both sports involve a pitcher throwing the ball to a batter with the hopes of getting him or her out. Both sports play for a certain number of innings and both sports require three outs to end the inning.

So, what’s the difference between the two?

Obviously, there are major variations between softball and baseball and the two should not be referred to as the same sport, but often enough they are — and that isn’t right. Baseball and softball may have the same concept, but there are huge variations in how the games are played. I have personal experience with this because I play on a competitive level softball team, and I see the differences in the two games.

Teens salute past leaders on President's Day

The leaders of this country have had some extraordinary obstacles to overcome; they have had to rise to meet many challenges.

Today is Presidents Day, a day to stop and think about our past presidents and what they have done for our country. We have had 44 presidents ranging from movie stars to persons with disabilities to war heroes.

In honor of this day, we asked some Top of Utah teens about their favorite presidents throughout history.

Depending on your perspective, Valentine’s Day can be bitter or sweet

It’s a love-hate relationship, this February day set aside for things of the heart.

On the plus side, it’s a day when sweeties can tell each other in words, actions, gifts, letters or any other form of communication how much they love and care about one another.

Yet there are downsides, too: Maybe there is no significant other, or it seems fake to be told to tell others we love them, or all the Valentine’s hoopla seems a bit too sappy and cheesy.

Our TX. staff weighs in on what they find wonderful and disturbing about Valentine’s Day.

Hitting the Christmas highlights in Utah

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, just like in the popular song by Johnny Mathis, and teenagers everywhere are teaming up with groups of friends or finding cute dates to go see the enchanting lights.

Bringing out the Christmas spirit, lights not only present a beautiful and inviting view, they can also make for a merry and charming night out.

Vote for the issues, not the man

The day has finally come; just 24 hours left until we choose between President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney.

Everyone has their own opinion on Obama vs. Romney but usually you only hear what grumpy old pundits from TV think about the election, or old men in the neighborhood who think the louder you yell the more you hear them, or, occasionally, our parents.

But what do teens think? Just because we can’t vote doesn’t mean that we don’t have an opinion. Most teens know what is going on even if they don’t know all the facts.

It’s O’scares time once again

Out into the dark nights we go, come October, to be surprised, startled and scared out of our wits.

Some of our TX. staff members embraced the fright factor of Halloween and visited a few of the Top of Utah’s haunted attractions. But they didn’t do it just for fun and chills — they also had a mission, to seek out the best and worst elements of each venue.

So — with a drum roll, please — we now present our TX. O’Scares awards for 2012.
