MIAMI - Last weekend's horror-movie episode on the MacArthur Causeway in Miami brought together two troubled men, one who was struggling to get his life on track, another who had given up trying.

Rudy Eugene, 31, had been seeking spiritual guidance in Scripture. On May 24, two days before he would viciously attack a homeless man named Ronald Edward Poppo, Eugene attended a Bible-study session at a friend's North Miami Beach home.

Cop fired for casting spell on city manager

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- The North Miami Beach police officer accused of trying to cast a Santeria spell over the city manager's office to stop him from slashing police jobs was fired Monday.

City Manager Lyndon Bonner, the target of Officer Edith Torres' allegedly magical plot, fired the 24-year veteran for conduct unbecoming of an officer.
