Bag a gift for Dad before Father's Day

Ask most hunters and fishermen who introduced them to the outdoors and most will reply that it was their fathers. To honor this hallowed handed-down tradition, many outdoor offspring will be spending Father's Day with their dads, participating in their favorite outdoor activities.

Outdoorsmen love the latest widgets and gadgets, as well as time-tested tools and books that help them become better hunters and fishermen.

Here a few ideas for gifts that will be cherished long after they have been received on Father's Day.

Before, during, after spawn, fish can be induced to bite

NEW HILL, N.C. -- Fishing for bass this time of the year can be rewarding or frustrating.

A lot of the largemouth bass at Harris Lake -- considered to be the state of North Carolina's finest trophy bass lake -- have finished their spring spawning season.

Some haven't.

Study: Working moms have sicker kids

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Stay-at-home moms may have been right all along when their maternal instincts told them they're best equipped to care for their children.

A new study from North Carolina State University concludes that children of mothers who work outside the home have a significantly higher risk of health problems, accidents and injuries.

The study found that kids of working moms have a 200 percent increase in the risk of experiencing overnight hospitalizations, asthma episodes and injuries or poisonings.

Parenting is an intensely emotional subject that leads to feelings of guilt, inadequacy and -- just as often -- a sense of superiority among parents, particularly among moms who handle the bulk of child-rearing duties. The so-called mommy wars have heated up in recent years as the numbers of women with children under age 18 who are in the workforce has risen to more than 75 percent.

N.C. man pleads guilty to terror charges

NEW BERN, N.C. -- The man accused of being the ringleader of a North Carolina terrorism ring that threatened jihad overseas pleaded guilty Wednesday afternoon in federal court.

Daniel Patrick Boyd, 40, who lived in Johnston County, told a judge he was guilty of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorism between November 2006 and July 2009. He also plead guilty to conspiracy to "murder, kidnap, maim and injure people in a foreign country."

He is scheduled to be sentenced in May and could be given a life sentence.

H1N1 flu still a danger to young people, health officials warn

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The death of a healthy Cary, N.C., high school senior last week of H1N1 flu is a reminder that the strain can still be lethal to young people, health officials said.

When the novel virus hit in 2009, college-age people seemed especially vulnerable, striking a group that is generally less inclined to get vaccinated or to seek treatment when sick.

Dentists take on the FTC over teeth whitening

RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina's dentists have filed a lawsuit challenging the Federal Trade Commission's authority to stop them from shutting down tooth-whitening operations at mall kiosks and day spas.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Raleigh, alleges constitutional violations last summer when the FTC charged that the state's dental board was squelching competition by targeting the whitening services.

Sex offenders fight ban on joining social networks

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Registered sex offenders aren't allowed at schools, churches, shopping malls or other places where children may gather in the real world.
