Vonn finds winning form despite tumult off slopes

BEAVER CREEK, Colo. -- Lindsey Vonn is chilling out after an exhausting week of charging down the course.

For the next few days, the Olympic gold medalist will catch her breath in Vail as she taps the brakes on a bustling schedule.

Her plans?

Some relaxing, some training. That's it.

So swift on the slopes, she's taking full advantage of this slower pace.

A surging Lindsey Vonn finds respite on the slopes

BEAVER CREEK, Colo. -- Lindsey Vonn remains on top of her game despite the turmoil in her life.

She dominated at Lake Louise last weekend, winning two World Cup downhills and a super-G by a combined margin of 3.82 seconds -- a landslide in skiing.

Her success comes in the midst of divorce proceedings from her husband of four years, Thomas Vonn, who also served as her adviser and personal coach.

But if the tumult is affecting her, Vonn certainly isn't showing it on the slopes.

Sullivan rounding back into form after concussion

BEAVER CREEK, Colo. -- Three years ago, Marco Sullivan broke through for his first World Cup win in what he figured would be a string of them.

Now, still stuck on one, the U.S. skier realizes what's been holding him back -- himself.

After his downhill win in Chamonix, France, Sullivan became a little complacent and figured that his talent, not so much his work ethic, would carry him to the top.

Lindsey Vonn, husband begin divorce proceedings

ASPEN, Colo. -- After four years of marriage, Lindsey Vonn is splitting with Thomas Vonn, who also serves as her chief adviser and assists as a coach.

The Olympic gold medalist skier confirmed Sunday night the couple has started divorce proceedings.

Teen skier Shiffrin eager to begin year in Aspen

VAIL, Colo. -- Being one of the youngest members of the U.S. ski team, teenager Mikaela Shiffrin is concerned about keeping up.

With her chemistry course, not competitors on the course.

Vonn takes aim at reclaiming overall title

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. -- Lindsey Vonn has found her rhythm on the ski slopes and the dance floor.

The Olympic gold medalist turned in quite a two-step to start the season, capturing her first giant slalom race last month followed by attending her first homecoming dance with a teenager who gathered up enough courage to ask her out.

U.S. Ski Team partners with Copper for training run

COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. -- Just two weeks before its scheduled opening, the winding downhill course remains mostly covered in mud with hints of scrub brush poking through the only traces of snow in sight.

In years past, it would have taken a blizzard for this slope to have a shot at being skiable anytime soon.

Only, this isn't any year and this isn't any trail.

The U.S. Ski Team has invested millions to partner with Copper Mountain and launch its own training run at the resort from Nov. 1 to Dec. 10. There are 87 automated snowmaking guns on standby, prepared to work around the clock to blanket the nearly two-mile course and guarantee Olympic gold medalists such as Lindsey Vonn, Julia Mancuso, Bode Miller and Ted Ligety an early base of solid snow under their skis.

NHL players, researchers take hard look at helmets

DENVER -- The custom-fitted helmet that Colorado Avalanche forward Peter Mueller will wear this season provides peace of mind as much as added protection.

He was so concerned about suffering yet another concussion, Mueller opted for an Easton model that cradles the base of his skull and safeguards the top of his temples.

Mueller, who missed all last season with a head injury, feels safe on the ice -- almost.

Broncos coach Fox: Tebow still a quarterback

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Broncos coach John Fox made it absolutely clear Monday that Tim Tebow's future lies in throwing passes, not catching them.

A day after using his backup quarterback as an emergency wide receiver, Fox reiterated: "He is a quarterback."

But in a pinch, Tebow makes an interesting decoy. Not that Fox wants to travel down that road again.

U.S. enters worlds with some top stars missing

DAEGU, South Korea -- The world championships are supposed to offer a peek of what's in store for the 2012 London Olympics.

Yet some of the biggest names in U.S. track have been reduced to spectators.

Tyson Gay is out with a surgically repaired hip; Jeremy Wariner's sidelined with a torn ligament in his left foot; and Wallace Spearmon, along with hurdler Lolo Jones, didn't even make the team.

Kershaw giving Philly's Big 3 run for NL Cy Young

DENVER -- By his own calculation, hard-throwing lefty Clayton Kershaw has seven starts remaining.

That's seven more chances to display his increasing maturity on the mound, seven more opportunities to show that he indeed belongs in the conversation for the NL Cy Young award.

Oblique strains hit baseball hard this season

DENVER -- The piercing twinge Minnesota Twins reliever Glen Perkins experienced each time he threw to the plate almost felt like a knife being plunged into his ribcage -- and twisted.

What started as mild discomfort in his right side as he warmed up in the bullpen had exploded into full fury after a few pitches on the mound.

Finally, Perkins couldn't stand the agony and motioned to the dugout to be taken out of the game at Arizona in May.

Jones puts title on line vs. Jackson at UFC 135

DENVER -- UFC light heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones always envisioned himself fighting crime, not competitors.

A wrestler in college, Jones had his heart set on a law enforcement career once he finished his degree. But having a young family led to a career change.

Tseng attempting to complete career grand slam

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- There was a time when Yani Tseng shied away from socializing on the golf course.

Usually outgoing, the top-ranked Taiwanese golfer was so insecure about her broken English that she would stay away from others in her group at LPGA events, rather than even attempt a conversation.

UFC's use of social media expands fan base

Even with the best seat in the building, UFC president Dana White spends more time staring at his phone than the fights in front of him.

At these main events, he's simply more interested in a ringside view into the world of social media.
