If you have authority, be cautious and compassionate

Law enforcement officers/deputies go through extensive training before they start work in the community. One of their many trials in training is to be stunned by a Taser gun before they are allowed to carry one, let alone use one on another human being.

Our law enforcement professionals are often hired for their education and life experiences. Both make them more likely to successfully interact with the negative parts of society.

Remember road laws that protect our children

It's bad enough that programs are being cut all over the place, pushing back budgets and monies that help educate, pay for community needs and support our local programs, but it seems that people are already starting to lose their minds!

I think all parents would agree with me that sending their children out to catch the bus is one of the most frightening experiences lately. I cannot imagine the feeling of the bus drivers when a car or truck comes flying by at 40 to 50 mph, making a conscious decision to switch lanes in order to pass a bus that is definitely stopped in the road with the obvious flashing lights and extended stop sign visible in the lane he just chose to get into.

Remember the human equation

Give 150 percent. Work your fingers to the bone. Go the extra mile. Blood, sweat and tears.

Those are the things we say about our jobs and workforce. Those are the things we think we are supposed to live up to all of the time. Granted, there are times when everyone is expected to "step up," but how and when and for whom. How far do we take it or not take it?

The last tangible written word

The newspaper seems to be, to me, the last of the tangible written word. I enjoy the paper for many reasons, more recently because I am writing for it and my articles are printed. But I also see the news paper as a daily reminder of our most wonderful asset in America, freedom of speech (and press). It can be found on the benches of local coffee houses, and sometimes in the waiting rooms of local business.

Think outside the norm on giving

Winter is here. Many of us checked our furnaces and are now running them full time. Ordinary utility bills as well as heat will be a struggle for many this year. Prior to the "recession," heat bills were an issue for many of our community members.

The elderly will have to choose between their heat bill or medication and families that have lost a once steady or dependable income will have to choose between food or insurance and /or the heat bill.

Back to school? Free college education!

Thomas Edison once said, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

With back-to-school just around the corner, plenty of people are wondering if this will be another year of putting school off. No money, no day-time available hours for classes, no transportation, no child care help. Most grants and loans seldom help the person working through adverse circumstances.

Obituaries could spark discussions, education

I have lost many a loved one and been a part of writing too many obituaries or eulogies so I know how difficult and or personal and emotional that job can be. Our family losses were due to many different causes.
