Handgun

Should gun ownership be private or public information?

Routine requests for public records have become anything but routine for some newspapers these days.

For the third time in as many months, a newspaper has faced an angry backlash, including threats of violence, after it sought government data on local gun permit holders. In the two most recent instances, the newspapers rescinded requests for the documents amid the outcry, with one issuing an abject apology to its readers and the local sheriff for daring to seek the information in the first place.

Why are the majority of random mass killers white males?

Of all the information turned up about Adam Lanza in the days since he killed 27 people and himself in Newtown, Conn., two obvious facts have barely been mentioned: He was a man, and a white man at that.

Why were so many, so wrong about shooter's mother being teacher?

As the horror unfolded in Newtown, Conn., last Friday, dozens of news sources reported a striking element of the story: that Nancy Lanza, mother of shooter Adam Lanza, was a teacher at the school where her son killed 26 people before killing himself.

A review of the pundits who got it wrong

Elections make fools of pundits and prognosticators (although some might have been that way before the vote). In any case, no, thank you, experts and geniuses, for the following utterances made in the days and weeks before President Obama was reelected Tuesday by 303 to 206 in the Electoral College (and maybe with Florida’s 29 votes, too).

"It comes down to numbers.

Debate moderator played role of referee

True to her predictions, moderator Candy Crowley was an active, aggressive and prominent presence in Tuesday night’s second presidential debate.

The longtime CNN reporter and host pressed, poked and prodded President Barack Obama and GOP nominee Mitt Romney when necessary, and occasionally played fact-checker and referee between the two men, during a town-hall debate at Hofstra University in New York.

CNN moderator plans to play journalistic role in debate

WASHINGTON - Candy Crowley, the moderator for Tuesday’s second presidential debate, isn’t backing down.

The CNN reporter and host said Monday that she intends to take an active part in the town-hall-style debate, despite efforts by the campaigns of President Barack Obama and GOP nominee Mitt Romney to curtail her role.

Do campaigns really change voters' minds?

In a few short weeks, Alan Abramowitz will predict whether Barack Obama or Mitt Romney will win the popular vote for president - and he’s almost certain to be right.

Abramowitz, a political science professor at Emory University, has correctly called every popular-vote winner since he began forecasting elections in 1992. He has come within two percentage points, on average, of predicting the winner’s share of the vote in those elections, too, including Al Gore’s super-squeaky majority in 2000.
