Braves call rare meeting, try to 'get mojo back'

ATLANTA -- Mired in their first four-game losing streak of the season, the Atlanta Braves called a rare team meeting Tuesday before facing the Florida Marlins.

Third baseman Chipper Jones said the meeting was "basically a circling of the wagons" after a galling 12-inning loss to the Marlins the night before. Atlanta had lost seven of nine overall, reducing its lead in the wild-card race to 4 1/2 games over St. Louis.

NASCAR waits while storms move through Atlanta

HAMPTON, Ga. -- The remnants from Tropical Storm Lee pushed through the Atlanta area with a fury, bringing heavy rain and fierce wind.

NASCAR only hopes the miserable weather is gone by Tuesday.

The Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway was postponed Sunday night when the outer bands of the storm doused the track before the drivers could even start their engines. Given the gloomy forecast, officials didn't even bother trying to hold the race on Monday.

NASCAR stars say no disrespect for Obama

HAMPTON, Ga. -- NASCAR star Tony Stewart scoffed at the notion he turned down an invitation from the White House as some sort of political statement.

Stewart is among four Sprint Cup drivers who say they can't attend next week's meeting with President Obama because of scheduling conflicts. Eight others who made last year's Cup playoff, including five-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson, plan to be there along with NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France.

"Trust me, if we could be there, we'd definitely be there," Stewart said Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway. "I've always viewed it as an honor just to get an invitation to go. I've enjoyed every trip every time I've gone there. I've learned more and more about it. And it's pretty cool feeling to be with most powerful man in the world. That's not an invitation we take lightly."

Obscure golfers lead at PGA

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -- Brendan Steele is playing in his first major championship. Jason Dufner has never won a tour event.

Hard to tell at the PGA Championship.

The no-names stayed cool on a sweltering Saturday at Atlanta Athletic Club, setting up a final round that will be short on recognizable faces but could end a major drought for the Americans. Steele shot 4-under 66 and was tied with Dufner, who joined him at 7-under 203 with a 68.

Keegan Bradley, another guy playing in his first major, bounced back from a double bogey at the first hole for a 69 that left just one stroke back heading to the final round, another perfect fit for what is developing as the theme of the year's final major.

Scott talked with caddie about Firestone brouhaha

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -- Steve Williams says he meant no harm.

Adam Scott calls it no big deal.

Now, they agree, it's time "to let our clubs do the talking."

PGA: They don't call it Hot-Lanta for nothing

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -- For those outside the ropes, there are fans atop the bleachers and misting stations to cool down. For the players, there are buckets filled with cold, bottled water at every hole.

Better take advantage of it.

NFL owners vote for tentative deal

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -- NFL owners voted overwhelmingly in favor of a tentative 10-year agreement to end the lockout, pending player approval.

Thursday's vote was 31-0, with the Oakland Raiders abstaining from the ratification, which came after a full day of meetings at an Atlanta-area hotel. While owners pored over the terms, Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke on the phone several times with NFL Players Association head DeMaurice Smith, including filling him in on the results of the vote before it was announced.

Evans eyeing 2012 Olympics in swimming comeback

Janet Evans was perfectly content to walk away from swimming after the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She had her gold medals, her world records. She was burned out and ready to move on.

Evans morphed easily from athlete to spokeswoman. She got married and had two kids. By all accounts, the life she's built over the last 15 years is full and rewarding.

Still, something kept nagging at her. She couldn't escape the tug of the pool.

Muslim lifter tries to compete and remain faithful

ATLANTA -- Looking to get stronger, Kulsoom Abdullah took up weightlifting a couple of years ago. She quickly grew to love the male-dominated sport, entering local competitions and even allowing herself to dream of one day making it to the Olympics.

She'd like to see how far this passion might take her, but not if it means compromising her religious beliefs.

There's still a hockey team in the Atlanta area

ATLANTA -- The Thrashers are moving to Winnipeg. But Atlanta fans can still get their hockey fix, as long as they're willing to cheer for a Double-A team.

The Gwinnett Gladiators have been members of the ECHL since 2003, based in suburban Duluth. After getting plenty of calls and emails wondering how the Thrashers sale would affect the minor-league franchise, team officials sent out a news release to remind everyone that next season's home opener is Oct. 21 against the Greenville Road Warriors.

Restrictor-plate racing now a tag-team match

TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Jimmie Johnson didn't mind a little tag teaming.

Of course, he won the race.

Matt Kenseth thought it was a terrible idea.

Then again, he was knocked out by a crash.

Expect plenty of radio chatter at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Some compare it to trying to land a date for the prom. Really, it's just two parties haggling over a potentially lucrative business deal.

Only in this case, the negotiations are taking place at nearly 200 mph.

Drivers who usually only talk to their crew chiefs, spotters and perhaps a teammate will be chatting it up with a bunch of guys they're trying to beat during Sunday's restrictor-plate race at Talladega Superspeedway, all looking for someone to go along with a one-car-leads, one-car-pushes, then-we'll-switch arrangement.

USA Swimming pushes for change after Crippen death

Without assistance or cooperation from the world governing body, USA Swimming is pressing forward with proposals that would place limits on water temperatures and require adequate rescue personnel and other safety improvements at open-water meets after the death of American star Fran Crippen.

A five-member panel headed by former International Olympic Committee vice president Dick Pound released its report Wednesday, though it couldn't address exactly what happened to Crippen during a 10-kilometer race in the United Arab Emirates on Oct. 23.

A caddie for the ages celebrates his 50th Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Everywhere he turns at Augusta National, Carl Jackson is asked to pose for a picture or sign an autograph.

No surprise there.

He's as much a part of this place as the green jacket or Magnolia Lane.

Rodgers sheds Favre's shadow in Packers' win

ATLANTA -- Brett who? Aaron Rodgers has turned these NFL playoffs into his own showcase.

Carving up the NFC's top-seeded team, Rodgers threw three touchdown passes, ran for another score and led the Green Bay Packers to their second straight postseason road victory with a stunning 48-21 rout of the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday night.

The Packers (12-6) will have to win one more on the road to complete their improbable run from sixth seed to the Super Bowl, but nothing looks out of the question the way Rodgers is playing. He'll lead Green Bay into the NFC championship game at either Chicago or Seattle next weekend.
