These 3 states are key to Romney win

WASHINGTON — The presidential candidates have just placed their opening bets, and three states stand out as keys to the 2012 election: Ohio, Virginia and, perhaps surprisingly, Iowa.

How Mitt Romney will choose his running mate

WASHINGTON--For those in political circles, the next three months will be consumed by speculation about Mitt Romney's running mate. Early favorites include Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio and Rep. Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin. Many more names will be floated -- some will be serious contenders, others not -- before the pick is announced.

Rick Perry to quit presidential race

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who parachuted into the 2012 Republican presidential contest on a surge of upbeat expectations, is expected to exit the contest Thursday, two days before a South Carolina primary in which he was trailing far behind the leaders.

Romney may be forced to shift course because of Perry

WASHINGTON -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney may be forced to shake up his strategy to win the Republican presidential nomination now that Texas Gov. Rick Perry has seized the top spot in the latest Gallup poll.

Among Romney's likely shifts: softening his focus on New Hampshire, the first primary state, and starting a more aggressive campaign in Iowa, where the race actually begins.

A nationally televised debate, a test vote in Iowa, and a candidacy by Texas Gov. Rick Perry, should he decide to seek the GOP nomination, could shake up the Republican presidential race in the coming days. Romney's focusing far less on Iowa than he did in 2008, and Gross, a top 2008 supporter, but unaligned this year, said, “Perry can come here and legitimately go after the economic message and, if he does, Romney’s in trouble."

Romney's shaky front-runner perch

SAN FRANCISCO — Six months before the scheduled start of the presidential primaries, Mitt Romney has staked a strong claim as the Republican front-runner in a contest shrouded by an unusual degree of volatility and uncertainty.

Romney reworks image, nears official second presidential bid

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Mitt Romney formally kicks off his presidential candidacy today as the nominal Republican front-runner, hoping that persistent questions about his beliefs and his record are swamped by overwhelming anxiety about the economy.

A whole new Romney for 2012 presidential run

WASHINGTON -- Defying his reputation as a 1950s square, the new, more casual Mitt Romney is popping up around the country as he readies a second run for president. He's going tieless on network TV, strolling NASCAR pits in Daytona and sporting skinny Gap jeans bought for him by his wife.
