High school coach going strong in 60th season

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. -- The trophy case outside Summerville coach John McKissick's office is filled to capacity, a mix of silver championship prizes and yellow-edged photos from an unparalleled career that's spanned nearly six decades.

With 10 state titles and a record 586 victories, all with this South Carolina high school, the 84-year-old McKissick long ago became football's all-time national wins leader at any level -- high school, college or pro. Still, McKissick is out on the sideline getting ready for his 60th season in charge when Summerville travels to Conway on Friday.

Newton happy with contract, first practice

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Cam Newton smiled to the hundreds of fans who cheered as the Heisman Trophy winner took the field Saturday for the first time with the Panthers.

And he doesn't feel like a No. 1 pick shortchanged by the system.

Newton practiced a day after signing a four-year, $22 million deal with Carolina. The fans at Gibbs Stadium began to cheer as they saw Newton in his red No. 1 jersey walk down the hill from the locker room, his arms around Panthers star runner DeAngelo Williams.

Player takes pride in homeland, Masters honor

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Gary Player isn't sure what he's prouder of these days -- his selection as an honorary starter at the Masters or his homeland's continuing success in major championships.

Player was picked this month to join his longtime rivals and friends Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus as starters for next year's event at Augusta National. Player was equally proud of Charl Schwartzel, the young South African who won the Masters this spring on the 50th anniversary of Player's first triumph there.

Gary Player recalls the beauty of green jacket

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Gary Player was already a major champion when he played the Masters in 1961. By the time the tournament ended, the South African had defeated Arnold Palmer and become the first international player to wear the green jacket. It also marked him as a rising star.

"Confidence is a very, very big thing in this sport," Player said by phone this month. "There is such a fine line that winning at Augusta like that meant an awful lot to me."

Trucks, Darlington in NASCAR spotlight

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The path is clear, though perhaps a bit tricky, for young truck racers such as Joey Coulter and Johanna Long at Darlington Raceway this weekend.

With NASCAR's Sprint Cup and Nationwide series off this week, the spotlight belongs to the Camping World Truck Series' Too Tough To Tame 200 and up-and-comers hoping to make a mark such as the 20-year-old Coulter and 18-year-old Long.

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- From Tweet-Ups to YouTube ads, chasing the fan vote for a NASCAR All-Star spot has gone viral.

Sprint Cup drivers pleased with tires after tests

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Elliott Sadler had no complaints for Goodyear, only for those drivers griping about the manufacturer.

Major feast: Big leaguers bring rehab bonanza

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Catcher Tim Federowicz was impressed with everything John Smoltz had to offer in his minor league rehab assignment.

The All-Star ace brought everything to the plate: fastball and slider -- steak, ribs and fixin's, too.
Federowicz twice was called on this spring by the Class A Greenville Drive as Smoltz worked his way up to the Boston Red Sox. The second-year catcher discovered a patient, friendly and accommodating star, plus a generous, heaping postgame buffet.
"Most of the guys will buy you a spread," Federowicz said. "But it's not usually Longhorn's Steak House."

Darlington lands sponsor for racing festival

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- If any of the entries breaks down at Darlington Raceway's fall festival, they might not have to look far for replacement parts.

Track president Chris Browning said on Tuesday that O'Reilly Auto Parts has signed on as a presenting sponsor for the Darlington Historic Racing Festival in September.
The second-year festival is Darlington's attempt to tap into its history as NASCAR's oldest superspeedway and keep the quirky oval relevant when it's not hosting the annual Mother's Day weekend Sprint Cup race.
"That's our goal, to build this thing," Browning said. "You hear Darlington Raceway and you think about the history and tradition of the sport and this event fits right in with that.
