U.S. captain Rampone considering 2015 World Cup

NEW YORK -- U.S. captain Christie Rampone is no longer so sure she'll retire after the London Olympics.

Non-traditional uniforms come to college hoops

NEW YORK -- The gray area of non-traditional uniforms is coming to college basketball.

Nike unveiled its new "platinum" line Wednesday to be worn by nine powerhouse men's and women's teams for one game each later this season. Like the gaudy outfits that have become so popular in college football, these take liberties with the programs' standard color schemes.

"We feel we have the opportunity to create as much energy as they do on the football field," said Tracy Teague, global creative director for Nike Basketball.

With Olympics looming, Phelps, coach find balance

NEW YORK -- Michael Phelps and coach Bob Bowman were texting back and forth a couple of weeks ago about whether he would swim a timed 5,000, a grueling workout he hadn't done in a decade.

Phelps had a blunt answer: "No." But then he asked, "Do I need to?"

Natalie Coughlin primed for third Olympic trip

NEW YORK -- Chasing her third Olympics, Natalie Coughlin isn't sure the trend of making the games over and over will become routine in swimming.

Michael Phelps is going for his fourth, Ryan Lochte his third. Dara Torres, Ian Thorpe, Janet Evans, Amanda Beard -- everyone in the sport seems to be shattering the assumption that the Olympics are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Surf champ Carissa Moore ready to take on the boys

NEW YORK -- Carissa Moore was too shy to talk to her sports-star classmate.

Now a world champion surfer, Moore was a high school freshman who couldn't get up the nerve to introduce herself to Michelle Wie, who's 3 years older.

These days, the 19-year-old from Hawaii is setting an example as a teenage athlete breaking records and boundaries.

Moore became the youngest Association of Surfing Professionals women's world champion at age 18 over the summer. And starting next month, she'll be the only woman competing against more than 200 men in two events of the Triple Crown of Surfing on the North Shore of Oahu.

Phelps back in pool, training for 2012 Olympics

NEW YORK -- It's still September, and Michael Phelps has already been training for six weeks.

He couldn't say that in any of the last three years since his record-setting Beijing Olympics. The 16-time medalist is swimming more yards per week now -- 10 months before the London Games -- than he ever did in the lead-up to this past summer's world championships.

All events live in some form for Olympics on NBC

NEW YORK -- NBC's Olympic coverage in London will look very familiar, with one major twist.

For the first time, the network plans to show every event live in some form -- even if it's just raw video streaming online. But the prime-time broadcasts will still use that traditional formula of human-interest features and taped competition.

MLS games to air on NBC networks starting in 2012

NEW YORK -- Major League Soccer games will be televised by NBC's networks starting next season, doubling the number of homes that dozens of games will be available in.

The package currently on Fox Soccer Channel will move mainly to the NBC Sports Network, Versus' new name beginning Jan. 2. The cable channel will air 38 regular-season games, three playoff games and two U.S. men's national team matches each year.

NBC will broadcast two regular-season MLS games, two playoff games and two national team appearances under the three-year contract announced Wednesday.

"It shows our sport is ready for prime time," MLS Commissioner Don Garber told The Associated Press.

Pac-12 announces national, regional networks

NEW YORK -- Even during its run to the BCS title game last season, Oregon played one contest that wasn't televised.

Ducks coach Chip Kelly will no longer have to hedge when out-of-state recruits' parents ask if they'll be able to watch their sons on TV. The Pac-12 announced Wednesday that it was launching its own networks.

George Brett on Jeter: Tough to get 3,000th hit

NEW YORK -- George Brett predicts the 3,000th hit of Derek Jeter's career will be harder to get than the first.

"That first at-bat will be a little tough," the Hall of Fame third baseman, one of the 27 players in the 3,000 Hit Club Jeter is seeking to join, said of Thursday night's Yankees game.

Franchitti frustrated by rough Indy 500 qualifying

NEW YORK -- Dario Franchitti was ticked off.

The defending Indianapolis 500 champ was looking forward to taking in the Manhattan skyline from atop the Empire State Building. Instead, after IndyCar's biggest names lit up the skyscraper green in honor of the race's 100th anniversary on a rainy, windy Monday, all they could see from the 86th floor sky deck was a blanket of white.

It was nothing compared to the frustration he felt Saturday, when Franchitti ran out of fuel on the final qualifying lap to fumble away a spot on the front row.

Tedy Bruschi, Jeff Fisher to climb Kilimanjaro

Tedy Bruschi started his training for Mount Kilimanjaro by working out on the stair-climber and treadmill in his hiking boots.

The retired New England Patriots star linebacker, ex-Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher and former Philadelphia Eagles tight end Chad Lewis will take on Africa's highest mountain next week. They'll be joined by four injured service members to raise awareness for the Wounded Warrior Project.

Networks work to master new era of sports in 3-D

NEW YORK -- The camera is affectionately known as WALL-E, its two lenses reminiscent of the eyes on the animated movie robot.

It shoots sports in 3-D, a sci-fi sight that's the product of the newest way fans can watch games on TV.

NHL enters talks for new TV deals flying high

NEW YORK -- The NHL capped last season with its best television rating for a game in 36 years.

League officials think they can do even better.
