LDS genealogy site FamilySearch to soon celebrate 1B indexed names

SALT LAKE CITY — It has been only seven years, but the Internet-based FamilySearch indexing program will celebrate the completion of its billionth searchable record in the next couple of weeks.

Indexing is recording information from historical documents to make the information searchable online.

Volunteers actually started indexing names 86 years ago but used much more difficult methods, such as microfilm and hard-copying records, to gain access to information.

The explosion of the Internet has opened doors for genealogists to make the work much easier.

Her 50th birthday gift? Ordinances completed for 50 people

OGDEN — Two years ago, as Kelly Quiroz sat in the Ogden Temple, she started thinking how she wanted to celebrate her 50th birthday.

At the time, it came to her that she should research 50 family names in her genealogy and complete the temple work.

Two years passed — she still had the goal, but her 50th birthday loomed just two months away, and she hadn’t started the work yet.

Weber County jail inmates catch family history bug

OGDEN — It didn’t take long for Theresa Coggins to fall in love with family history indexing. She does it at least three times a week and arranges her work schedule around indexing times.

One of her best friends, Joey Robison, feels the same way. She likes to imagine what the stories of the people she is looking up are all about.

The two are much like many others who enjoy indexing, or finding records of people to transfer to the LDS Family Search site.

Bathing beauties don Easter bonnets for watery parade

OGDEN — It wasn’t a usual water aerobics morning at the Marshall White Center on Monday.

Instead, a parade broke out — an Easter bonnet parade.

Several senior citizens took to the water wearing their bathing suits and fancy Easter bonnets in celebration of the holiday this week. The Easter bonnet parade and competition has become something of a tradition; it’s now in its fourth year.

Ogden School District cuts recesses in favor of teaching time

OGDEN — Older elementary school students in Ogden School District are getting less recess time. This year almost every elementary school in the district has cut out one recess for students in grades three through six and some schools have cut out the extra recess for all grades.

Students get one regular recess plus lunch recess. Before, students were getting a morning, afternoon and lunch recess. The reason? Administrators feel the students need more instructional time.

OGDEN — George and MaryJo LaTulippe’s last name started them on a hobby that can be enjoyed by everyone who drives by their house.

When outdoor flags started to become popular many, many years ago, the couple couldn’t resist buying a tulip flag to help signify the “LaTulippe” name.

Now 125 flags later, they realize they must have started a hobby.

North Ogden: Employee pay too low

NORTH OGDEN — Pay is too low for employees in North Ogden, according to the mayor and the council-appointed North Ogden Benefits Committee.

The committee suggested the city take a retention strategy with employees, rather than the cost-containment strategy the city has been using the past few years.

The city appointed the seven-member committee in mid-2012. The committee was made up of North Ogden residents who work both in the private and public sector. Employees Annette Spendlove, from human resources, and Finance Director Bryan Steele also helped on the committee.

Committee Chairman Neal Berube recently addressed the mayor and council and paid high praise to Spendlove and Steele for their work on the committee.

“They are evidence of the great employees you have in your city,” Berube said.
