BCS sticks Boise State's Moore with flop finale

Kellen Moore deserves a better send off.

The Boise State quarterback, who has more victories as a starter than any college quarterback in history, will conclude his brilliant career Thursday night at the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas against Arizona State, a 6-6 team that has already had its coach fired.

What a waste.

LSU locks up title spot; Houston loses BCS bid

LSU did its part to make sure both the Tigers and Alabama get into the BCS national title game. Then Oklahoma State gave the voters a reason to rethink that rematch.

The top-ranked Tigers locked up a spot in the championship on Jan. 9 in New Orleans with a 42-10 victory against No. 12 Georgia in the Southeastern Conference title game in Atlanta on Saturday.

Oklahoma State followed that with a 44-10 blowout of rival Oklahoma in Stillwater.

SEC title game is far from meaningless

The Southeastern Conference championship game between No. 1 LSU and No. 12 Georgia is not meaningless.

Whether it has national title implications is at best debatable, but there is no denying that the winning an SEC championship represents far more than a step on the road to bigger goals for the Tigers, who could very well lose to Georgia and still play in the BCS championship game.

"There will be no review of what's next," LSU coach Les Miles said this week, referring to what comes after the SEC showcase in Atlanta on Saturday. "Nothing will come from my mouth about that. Our team is so looking forward to play Georgia. This is what the team has set its sights upon. This is the conference where we compete week in and week out.

Source: BYU, Big East end negotiations

A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that negotiations between the Big East and Brigham Young have broken off and the school will not be joining the conference.

The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the conference and school have not been making their talks public.

The Big East was trying to add BYU as part of its plan to expand westward and become a 12-team football league.

At issue are television rights. The person says BYU wanted to retain the rights to its home football games and the league could not agree to that.

No other school in major college football playing in a conference has such a deal.

Big East focuses on BYU for west wing

NEW YORK -- The Big East is working hard to put BYU in its new west wing.

A person with knowledge of the conference's expansion plans tells The Associated Press that Big East officials have made adding BYU a priority as they try to become a 12-team football conference.

PHILADELPHIA -- A person familiar with the decision says the Big East will invite Boise State, Navy and Air Force for football only and SMU, Houston and Central Florida for all sports.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the conference was not ready to announce which schools its members had voted Tuesday to extend invitations to in the upcoming days.

Commissioner John Marinatto declined to give specifics of the Big East's plan after meeting with the league's presidents at a Philadelphia hotel.

OSU moves to 3rd in BCS standings

NEW YORK -- Rarely better than No. 2 in its own state, Oklahoma State is now the Big 12's best bet to play for a national championship.

The Cowboys moved up to third Sunday in the BCS standings, replacing rival Oklahoma as the team behind LSU and Alabama best positioned to reach the national title game. It's Oklahoma State's best showing in the BCS standings.

Two championship contenders lost for the first time Saturday, when Oklahoma and Wisconsin went down.

Source says Big East bigwigs to vote Monday on exit fee

NEW YORK -- The Big East knows which schools it wants to add. Now it's just a matter getting those programs to come aboard.

To help convince some of the candidates -- such as Boise State -- that the Big East will be stable in the long run, the conference has a plan in place to double its exit fee to $10 million.

An official in the Big East told The Associated Press that conference leaders are slated to vote Monday on raising that fee, which will clear the way to invite six new members.

A year later, LeGrand has reason to believe

WOODBRIDGE, N.J. -- Eric LeGrand makes this face sometimes. He scrunches up his nose and mouth, wiggles them a bit, stretches them from side to side.

He's got an itch. He can't scratch it because he is paralyzed below the shoulders.

If his mom was close by, he'd rub his face against her chest, shoulder or arm. He does that with his girlfriend, too. He'll even do it to one his physical therapists now and again.

NEW YORK -- The Big East plans to invite Boise State, Air Force and Navy as football-only members, and Central Florida to compete in all sports, after it doubles the exit fee for current members to $10 million.

An official in the Big East, speaking on condition of anonymity because the conference had not authorized anyone to speak publicly about its plans, told The Associated Press the invites could go out as soon as next week, but could take longer.

The officials also said Commissioner John Marinatto was in Cincinnati on Friday meeting with representatives from UCF.

Conferences do not publicly invite new members unless they are confident those invitations will be accepted.

The New York Post first reported the Big East was expected to invite Boise State, Air Force, Navy and UCF.

Big East meets, Pac-12 close to voting

NEW YORK -- As the Big East tries to figure out a survival strategy, the Pac-12 is nearing a decision on whether it wants to stretch farther east.

Big East football school officials will meet Tuesday night in New York City to discuss the league's future, and a Pac-12 official expects conference presidents in that league to decide by the end of the week if they want to expand again.

Florida State looks to return to center stage

At the 2001 Orange Bowl, Oklahoma ended one of the greatest runs in college football history when the Sooners beat Florida State to win the national championship.

The Seminoles haven't been serious title contenders since that 13-2 loss in Miami.

Dandy Dozen: Best coaches in college football

The winningest coach in the history of college football will be on one sideline this Saturday. That would be Penn State's Joe Paterno. On the other side will be Alabama's Nick Saban, the Crimson Tide's $4 million man and the best coach in college football today.

We'll see whether he's still on top Sunday morning.

Judging coaches is difficult because wins and losses aren't always equal. An eight-win season makes Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald look like a genius. An eight-win season for Les Miles at LSU has Tigers fans pining for change.

Kaepernick picks living room over green room

Colin Kaepernick picked the living room at his parents' house over the green room at Radio City Music Hall.

The Nevada quarterback declined an invitation to attend the NFL draft Thursday night in New York so he could relax with friends and family in his hometown of Turlock, Calif., about 90 miles south of Sacramento.

Kaepernick's rise leads to draft invite

A few months back, there was little doubt that Colin Kaepernick would be spending draft day with his family at his parents' house in California.

Kaepernick finished a four-year career at Nevada with gaudy statistics -- he's the only player in college football history with three seasons of 2,000 yards passing and 1,000 yards rushing -- but not much buzz as an NFL prospect.
