Obama’s opponents do a lot of crying wolf

The problem with scandals is that those who feel scandalized the most often hated the alleged scandal perpetrators before the gleeful finger-pointing and outraged clucking began.

That leaves the rest of us with mixed emotions. We want to be outraged -- we really do! -- because we love our country and we stand ready to be offended if our naive hope that good people do good things regardless of politics turns out to be dashed.

A sequestration only a Sasquatch could love

Most of us go through life with certain expectations, and it is a fair bet that being threatened by sequestration is not one of them. Annihilation in romance, possibly; demoralization at work, perhaps; infiltration of baldness, maybe; but victimization by sequestration? Unlikely.

Mitt doesn't give a whit about moochers

Ever the contrarian, I feel I must say something supportive about Mitt Romney, who has thrown the cat among the pigeons with his off-the-cuff remarks

He should have known that off-the-cuff remarks are always dangerous. Sometimes little bits of truth, like so many crumbs, drop into the cuffs -- only to come out later in the wash and cause embarrassment.

Conservatives' idea of a good time is the 1700s

The late William F. Buckley, the intelligent and witty voice of conservatism before talk-show primitives took over the microphone and the movement with it, famously described a conservative as "someone who stands athwart history, yelling 'Stop ... . ' "

There's only one slight problem with that: History does not stop. While it is impeded and diverted sometimes, mostly it just goes marching forward, trampling any "stop!" shouters standing in the way.

Today I stop to consider why conservatives behave as they do. Last week I looked at liberals, who are apt to be silly and unsure of what they stand for -- beyond a general desire to have the government do something nice.

Squishy liberals left with the right answers

In this year's presidential election, the American people will make a fateful choice: whether they want a liberal or conservative administration. Perhaps they will finally make up their minds instead of lurching from one political philosophy to the other as they tend to do.

But it is also possible Americans will choose a president in the traditional manner: on the basis of which candidate has the better hair, nicer-looking kids and the cuter dog -- important considerations, certainly, but ones that do not answer the pressing philosophical question.

Conservatives suffer from Obama Derangement Syndrome

As Janis Joplin famously sang, "Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose." Who knew that poor Janis was singing the same song unwittingly sung today by conservative politicians attacking universal health care? Critics of the dreaded health-care reform think Americans will be robbed of their freedom if the legislation isn't overturned, either by themselves or the U.S. Supreme Court.

Well, totalitarian nations are not oppressive because they take care of the sick. If memory serves, they just throw people into a jail cell and let them get sick.

Iran has steadfastly balked at demands to halt its uranium enrichment, which Washington and its allies worry could be the foundation for a future nuclear weapons program. Stop beating the drums for war with Iran

Out of the blue, an old buddy this week sent me some photos of us as soldiers in Vietnam back when we were young and stupid. That lamentable war seemed a good idea at the time, and for my part I remain proud that I served, but over the years I have come to think that the statesmen who sent us were the stupid ones.

In their sage grayness, they thought that every challenge was ripe for a military solution. They knew little and cared less about that foreign country's history and culture. They had a theory that if South Vietnam fell to communism, other dominos would topple, making all Asia in the likeness of Red China.

The 1 percent richly deserve these gifts

It is always a big problem finding just the right Christmas gift for some people, especially for the very rich 1 percent of the population, as I am sure you know.

While readers occupied with class jealousy will scorn me today for suggesting gift ideas for the super wealthy, I believe everybody should share in the goodwill of the season.

Anniversary arrives absent death panels

Wednesday marked the one-year anniversary of President Barack Obama signing the Affordable Care Act, if you support it -- or Obamacare, if you don't.

As one who supports the law but is disappointed in one aspect, I have a question: So where are the death panels already? No death panels are in sight, and some of us are dying to see them implemented. It just goes to show that Big Government can't organize a booze-up in a brewery.

In defense of the TSA workers, who must look at our bodies

Just in time for the Thanksgiving travel crunch, new security measures at airports have caused officials to raise the color-coded passenger irritability threat advisory. You need to be alert to this if you are planning to fly.

Election losers will have the last laugh

Our political affair is over. It might be time for a group hug. While I am not much for hugging myself, I understand it's quite popular and it would make a change from the recent unpleasantness.

Not having clairvoyance among my many gifts, I do not know how your beloved candidates performed, as I am writing this on Election Day, the morning before the morning after.

Machines behaving badly: Story of my life

Today we shall put aside all political battles to discuss a more insidious conflict: The one constantly waged between mankind and machines.

It must first be understood that some people have technological aptitude. Others -- and that includes me -- have technological ineptitude. We who are not at peace with technology pay dearly for this.

Newt is a gift to humorists

In a column that likes a joke, here is no joke: Newt Gingrich is thinking of running for president. Sure, why not? It is no crazier than any other political thought that has been expressed lately.

The former U.S. House speaker told The Associated Press Monday that his focus for the moment was on helping Republican candidates in advance of the midterm elections in November, but that he would decide in February or March whether to run for the White House. "I've never been this serious," he said.

American as soccer moms and apple pie

For starters, let me just say one thing: "Gooooalll!" There, that should wake up the sporting locust from his four-year hibernation and set his wings beating in fierce agitation.

Yes, somewhere in America, a tradition-minded sports writer -- or perhaps a blogger for some website -- is now rousing himself to belated action. He has heard that men in shorts from 32 nations are going to play soccer in South Africa starting Friday.

This turkey has something meaty to say

As one who has often been called a turkey during my journalism career, I feel that I am best placed to say something about Thanksgiving from the turkey's point of view.

By channeling my inner turkey, I offer the following thoughts not only concerning Turkey Day but also Christmas. This is another occasion for concern, thanks to Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" wherein a repentant Ebenezer Scrooge sends the Cratchit family a turkey, establishing it as the official holiday bird.
