Utah residents don't want proposed retirement changes

The Utah state employee retirement system is in the process of dramatic changes this session. I have fought hard against the changes that SB43 and SB63 will bring to the state. Thousands of people gathered outside of the capitol to protest changes to the retirement system.

'Messages' versus priorities

Prior to the 2010 legislative session, I really thought legislation would focus on the budget, ethics reform, and health care. However, I am consistently amazed at the number of "message" bills that take up the Legislature's time.

A trust fund for insurance

As I talked about last week, many in the legislature feel it is important to send "message" bills to Washington to let the federal government know to "get off Utah's back," and allow the state to have its rights.

'Message' bills don't merit support

The Utah Legislature is taking a bold move this session and is working to pass legislation that would prevent federal policies on firearms and national health care from reaching the state of Utah.

Budget cuts are not the only answer

With the second week of the session under our belts, things at the Legislature are progressing. Committees have been meeting frequently, and we have been busy as ever. While bills on various topics have floated their way through, the state budget is still the hot topic on Capitol Hill.
