Dialed In takes over No. 1 in AP's Derby Top 10

Long shot or favorite. Speedball or closer.

Makes no difference to Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito. All he's looking for is a 3-year-old thoroughbred who can run 1 1/4 miles faster than 19 others on the first Saturday in May.

Dialed In may fill the bill.

The Factor is new No. 1 in AP's Derby Top 10

As Uncle Mo was finishing third in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct over the weekend, race caller Tom Durkin exclaimed ... "and the Kentucky Derby is up for grabs!"

It sure is.

With Uncle Mo losing for the first time, there's a new No. 1 in The Associated Press' latest Run to the Roses Top 10 list of Derby contenders: The Factor.

Wood win would make it 5 in a row for Uncle Mo

NEW YORK -- Uncle Mo gives his owner, trainer and jockey every indication he can be a special racehorse.

Owner Mike Repole sees it in Uncle's Mo's eyes, and in the bay colt's confident gait and calm demeanor.

Uncle Mo's New York owner in Derby state of mind

NEW YORK -- Mike Repole is a New Yorker through and through. The kid from Queens used to play stickball and schoolyard basketball, and he loved those bus rides to Aqueduct Racetrack so he could bet on the horses.

Dialed In rings up right number for Kentucky Derby

No lie: Pants On Fire on AP's Top 10 Derby list

Welcome to the Kentucky Derby, Pants On Fire. Same to you, Animal Kingdom and Twice the Appeal.

A weekend full of surprises at tracks in Louisiana, Kentucky and New Mexico has put the names of these 3-year-olds on the AP's latest Run to the Roses Top 10 list of Derby contenders.

Pants On Fire upset Mucho Macho Man in the Louisiana Derby, Animal Kingdom took the Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park and 35-1 long shot Twice the Appeal won the Sunland Derby to create a minor Top 10 shuffle.

Village People's Derby choice: Mucho Macho Man

Patti Reeves has a few new ringtones on her cellphone, which means she's ready to disco at any time, morning, noon or night.

"Macho, macho man/I've got to be, a macho man," go part of the lyrics to her recent download of the Village People's 1970's party-song classic "Macho Man."

Reeves has good reason to dance these days -- she co-owns Mucho Macho Man, a 3-year-old colt favored to win the $1 million Louisiana Derby in his final prep before the Kentucky Derby on May 7.

A bountiful Derby road for Uncle Mo's owner

Mike Repole raised a glass of champagne and toasted his latest Kentucky Derby contender, Stay Thirsty.

"To have one horse for the Derby is unimaginable, to have two is unimaginable, a miracle," the colt's owner said to a party of 40 friends and family members after Stay Thirsty's victory in the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct over the weekend. "This doesn't come along very often, so let's all enjoy the ride."

Repole has been doing just that for weeks with unbeaten Uncle Mo, who remains No. 1 in the AP's latest Run to the Roses Top 10 Derby list. Stay Thirsty, who has been running in his stablemate's shadow, moves in for the first time at No. 6.

Soldat soars to No. 3 in AP's Top 10 Derby picks

Kiaran McLaughlin knows all about long shots in the Kentucky Derby.

Six years ago the trainer thought he had it won, only to see his 71-1 shot Closing Argument lose the lead in the final strides to 50-1 outsider Giacomo.

"Not that anybody remembers who finished second, but it was a great thrill," McLaughlin said the day after the 2005 Derby.

Uncle Mo tops list of Kentucky Derby contenders

Gotta go with Mo.

The Kentucky Derby is still about three months away, but there's little argument right now that Uncle Mo is the horse to beat on the first Saturday in May.

Winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and 2-year-old champion, Uncle Mo is training toward his 3-year-old debut next month in the Tampa Bay Derby.

So far, so good. The colt trained by Todd Pletcher worked a half-mile in a solid 47.45 seconds at Palm Meadows in Boynton Beach, Fla., on Sunday.

Pick 6 of teams who have lost their way

Losing lots of games in the NFL is one thing, simply being lost in the NFL is another. And that's where this week's Pick Six is headed -- to the land of the lost.

Big plays from guys with flowing locks

NEW YORK -- The song calls for heads of long, beautiful hair -- shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen hair. No problem, say many NFL players, who are growing their hair longer and longer these days -- or maybe it just seems that way.

Pick Six: Lookin' for a few good starting QBs

NEW YORK -- Two games into the season, and benching the quarterback is a trending topic in the NFL.

Almost everywhere you look, there's a team with a quarterback conundrum: bench the starter; bench the backup for the healthy returning starter; replace an injured backup with another backup; stick with your starter despite few bad games.

Rachel Alexandra seeks big win in Personal Ensign

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Happy in her summer home at Saratoga Race Course, Rachel Alexandra just may be rounding into championship form. Then again, maybe not.

Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb tosses the ball around during practice at training camp in Ashburn, Va., on Sunday.

A 6-pack of NFL story lines

McNabb in Washington. Carroll in Seattle. Favre in ... limbo.

Every team has at least one compelling story line as NFL training camps move into full swing.
