Mission: Haiku: Davis students become special agents for project

CLEARFIELD — The “Mission: Impossible” theme song can be heard as the voice of Special Agent 13 comes over the intercom into a classroom at South Clearfield Elementary informing students that their class has been chosen to lead a secret mission.

“Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is top secret,” said the special agent, who is really Assistant Principal Mike Page.

He explained that there were confidential instructions hidden in the classroom.

1939 Davis classmates meet monthly for lunch

LAYTON — The talk around the lunch table was about rattlesnakes, fishing and general good times.

This group of Davis High graduates, at age 90 and 91, meets each month to socialize and enjoy a good meal together.

On Jan. 10, the group met at Red Lobster in Layton.

While there is nothing unusual about former classmates delighting in each others’ company, this group doesn’t know who will be able to join them each month.

Kaysville honors 6-year-old for saving sister

KAYSVILLE — When 6-year-old Alyvia Hall saw her 4-year-old sister Alyssa run and leap into the deep end of a swimming pool, she took action.

Alyssa was struggling for her breath when Alyvia jumped into the pool and pushed her to safety.

On Nov. 8, Alyvia was surprised when Mayor Steve Hiatt, Kaysville Police Lt. Kenton Pies and the school principal Mike Volmar went to her first-grade classroom at Sam Morgan Elementary School to honor her for saving her younger sister’s life.

KAYSVILLE -- The Kaysville-Davis Branch of the American Association of University Women invites the public to join them at 7 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Kaysville Branch of the Davis County Library, 44 N. Main St.

Live like an Egpytian: Students get a taste of ancient culture

SYRACUSE -- "I love my name," 11-year-old Kaylee Lewis said as she lifted the small handmade cartouche that hung on a string around her neck.

"My name is the best, because it is my name," Kaylee said.

While the cartouche was once worn only by pharaohs, each of the 112 sixth-grade students at Cook Elementary School made the simple cartouches as part of their Egyptian studies.

KAYSVILLE -- Crowded around tables, children busily painting tiny pumpkins -- and as one child stood up to leave, another was there to take the vacated place.

Kacy Wilson attended the Monster Mash & Dash with two of her children -- Rafe and Ripley -- who sat at opposite tables, causing their mom to run back and forth to help each of them.

"The kids have enjoyed this a lot," Wilson said of the city-sponsored event Saturday evening at Heritage Park. "They have been begging me to paint pumpkins. They have seen signs around town (about the event) and have been looking forward to it."
