Toughness runs in the family of Chargers safety Bob Sanders

SAN DIEGO -- The most important bit of film study for Bob Sanders didn't come when he was preparing to face the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI, or the year he was named the NFL's defensive player of the year.

It was when his father brought home a video from the steel mill in Erie, Pa., footage of Marion Sanders swinging a 20-pound sledgehammer the way he did working those 17 1/2 -hour shifts for more than 30 years.

Jay Gruden draws tough assignment as Bengals' new offensive coordinator

GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- Jay Gruden has his older brother's voice, and their eyes have the same steely glint. Jay is bigger, has darker hair and more of a twisted smile than a sinister "Chucky" grimace.

"Jon's more edgy, grouchier too. Meaner," said the younger Gruden, new offensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals. "I'm a nice guy. I'm more laid back. His tolerance level isn't as high as mine, and mine's pretty low."

Case in point: During an offensive meeting this week, one of the Bengals had the nerve to chomp on a mouthful of ice as Gruden was making a point. The coach asked him to kindly knock it off.

The clock is on NFL owners' side

What's the key date for the NFL lockout? It's tempting to say June 3, when the 8th Circuit will hear oral arguments in the NFL's appeal of the lockout-lifting decision in District Court. But it's likely to take at least two weeks for that three-judge panel to issue a ruling, so a better key date is three weeks before the Sept. 8 kickoff game between New Orleans and Green Bay -- say Aug. 15. At a minimum, teams would need that much time to train for the start of the season. If camps are still closed at that point, you can bet games will either be pushed back or scrubbed.

For Keisel, 'The Beard' has grown on him, and Steelers teammates

DALLAS -- The debate over which Super Bowl XLV team has the edge can be argued convincingly from either side.

Sponsorship deal to boost Los Angeles' NFL bid

LOS ANGELES -- Backers of a plan to build a football stadium in downtown Los Angeles are set to announce Tuesday that they have reached a naming-rights deal worth $700 million, which would be the most valuable such agreement ever and a significant step toward bringing an NFL team to Los Angeles.

Rose Bowl will feature many NFL prospects

Several of the Wisconsin and Texas Christian players who will be competing Saturday in the Rose Bowl can expect to play on Sundays, in the NFL, next season. Los Angeles Times' NFL reporter Sam Farmer spoke to four pro evaluators -- Mike Mayock of the NFL Network, Chad Reuter and Rob Rang of CBS/NFLDraftScout.com, and an NFL team scout who spoke anonymously because he's not allowed to share his opinions publicly -- gave their opinions on some of the game's top NFL prospects and where they might be selected in April's draft:

Playoff picture starts to come into focus

LOS ANGELES -- As the NFL's regular season nears an end, with 15 weeks of more parity than clarity in the books, the playoff picture is starting to come into focus.

Three onside kicks that did the trick on Sunday

Three similar play calls. Three different settings. Three memorable results.

L.A. rumors prompt NFL fans in San Diego, Minnesota to show their love

LOS ANGELES -- San Diego is going nuts. Minnesota is going bonkers. Los Angeles is holding its breath.

These players could be household names for years to come in NFL

LOS ANGELES -- Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman has nine career victories, six of them fourth-quarter comebacks.

Cleveland running back Peyton Hillis has emerged as one of the NFL's toughest ball carriers to bring down.

Drama spans the NFL landscape topped by firing of Phillips

LOS ANGELES -- Wade Phillips is out in Dallas. Brad Childress is in (for now) in Minnesota. And Donovan McNabb has to wonder just where he stands in Washington.

All of a sudden, the Oakland Raiders are the well-adjusted ones.

They are rolling snake eyes in the NFL

LOS ANGELES -- The NFL doesn't allow gambling, but its teams sure have made some risky rolls of the dice this season.

And, all of a sudden, a few of those gambles are going belly-up:

These 10 are taking their chances

LOS ANGELES -- Sam Bradford had a spectacular showing for the St. Louis Rams last week, displaying dazzling accuracy and throwing for two touchdowns in an exhibition victory over New England.

Quarterbacks give 49ers a pair of firsts

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- They're No. 1. Twice.

Oakland Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey runs with the ball after a reception during their football training camp in Napa, Calif., on Tuesday.

For several second-year NFL players, this could be a make-or-break season

NAPA, Calif. -- Darrius Heyward-Bey clearly has the speed to separate from defenders.

But what does that matter if the second-year receiver can't leave his dismal rookie season in the dust?
