Adamson: Bowl gurus have ruined New Year's tradition

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, the college football season ended on New Year's Day -- or at least during the New Year's Day holiday.

When Jan. 1 fell on a Sunday, as it did this year, the big games were contested on Monday, but it was still an off day for most folks.

The Orange Bowl was usually the last bowl game of the season, and once the whistle blew on that one, the only college contests that remained were of the all-star variety.

Adamson: Cam Newton's growth speedy, spectacular

The No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft represents the hopes of a brighter future, with the understanding that there is no such thing as a sure thing.

Such was the case with Cameron Jerrell Newton, the Heisman Trophy winner out of Auburn and the man the Carolina Panthers tapped as their signal-caller-in-waiting last spring.

The franchise needed a quarterback, to be sure.

But why Newton? When would he be ready to start?

Chase format is a gimmick, but a wildly popular one

There are a lot of different ways to remember the 2011 fall race at Talladega Superspeedway.

One can choose to look at last Sunday's event as yet another installment of "Let's Make A Deal." Or perhaps the better title for this motorsports game show is "Let's Break A Deal."

Adamson: Gordon's Sprint Cup Hollywood ending slips away

For a while, the situation read like a movie script.

Jimmie Johnson, winner of five consecutive Sprint Cup championships, was struggling. Jeff Gordon -- the four-time titlist and teammate of Johnson -- was poised to claim a fifth title of his own, and first since 2001.

The old dog would show he still knew some new tricks, toppling his partner in speed, while giving team owner Rick Hendrick another top finish at the top level of stock-car racing.

Adamson: Changes in store at Talladaga

Talladega Superspeedway has been known as a lot of things during its long and storied history.

For years it was billed as "The World's Fastest Speedway," and later became "NASCAR's Most Competitive Track."

Adamson: The Chase: Don't bet against Johnson to defend title

Now that the 12-driver Chase field is set, the drama that leads to the drama is over for 2011. No longer will fans have to worry that Tony Stewart won't make the chase or Dale Earnhardt Jr. will fade out of contention.

Smoke and NASCAR's Most Popular Driver made the cut.

And the wild-card race, which was designed to add some spice to the Chase, resulted in Brad Keselowski and Denny Hamlin earning the final two spots in the field.

Both are young, both are brash, and both belong.

Adamson: Logano deals with harsh NASCAR reality

He's still just a kid, one who looks more at home at a bike shop spying a 10-speed than lurking in a NASCAR garage talking to a crew chief.

But Joey Logano, now 21, is starting to show some world-weariness. That wide-eyed, "aw, shucks" glow has been replaced by the stern look of a veteran. When he's frustrated, it shows.

Adamson: Belichick kicks around hot issues

Outside the greater New England area, football fans tend to think of Patriots coach Bill Belichick as a guy who spends all his free time polishing his hooves and horns, eating live rabbits and plotting evil.

But love him or fear him, he's a smart dude who I'm certain loves rabbits (but probably not for lunch).

Adamson: Is it finally Kyle Busch's year for Cup?

Kyle Busch is now locked into the Chase for the Cup.

The question is, does it really matter?

That seems like a cynical way to view the exploits of one of NASCAR's winningest drivers, especially after he racked up his series-leading fourth checker of the season on Sunday at Michigan.

Adamson: Hall of Fame not limited to NASCAR

Once the NASCAR Hall of Fame opened in Charlotte, it immediately became the biggest and best hall of fame stock car racing had to offer -- complete with a museum that is interactive, bright, shiny and fan-friendly.

The inaugural Class of 2010 was so exclusive it inexplicably excluded David Pearson, prompting NASCAR's winningest driver, Richard Petty, to wonder aloud how in the world someone like Pearson could be snubbed.

Junior offers advice to potential employee Danica Patrick

During a recent session with reporters at Pocono, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was bombarded with questions.

Nothing unusual about that. He's NASCAR's Most Popular Driver and has been for eight consecutive years, so he's always going to be bombarded with questions.

Adamson: What a difference year makes in Panthers' camp

In the National Football League, there's not a lot of space between the highest highs and the lowest lows. The Carolina Panthers understand this well.

In 2008 the club won the NFC South title and was expected to steamroll the Arizona Cardinals in the playoffs.

Adamson: Are drivers athletes?

Twitter, the invention that allows human beings to connect with other human beings via short, misspelled messages, has become quite popular among celebrities -- especially celebrity athletes.

Why talk when you can tweet? Having actual verbal conversations with people is so 1990.

Of course all it takes is one tweet to get a lot of people squawking, and that was the case recently when a professional football player revived the debate over whether or not racecar drivers are athletes.

Adamson: The most important number for Busch is 26

Trying to name the most polarizing driver in NASCAR is open for debate, but there's no debating Kyle Busch would be in the discussion.

His fans love his take-no-prisoners style, and they find his brashness refreshing.

Adamson: More NASCAR road rage at Sparta

You get only one shot to make a good first impression.

That being the case, the inaugural NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Sparta, Ky., left one of the worst first impressions in sports history.
