Column provided an illogical view on gun control

The Standard-Examiner’s publishing of Cagle Cartoons’ columnist Joe Gandelman’s “Are victims collateral damage sacrifice to the gun-worship god?” In Dec. 22 Viewpoints column, there is the classic example of media bias when it comes to guns in our society. This so-called “veteran journalist” proceeded to insult every law-abiding gun owner (all 80 million of us) in the country while at the same time exposing his ignorance to history itself and the case at hand.

Many would 'walk naked' to Arkansas for $850K

Editor,

Who can blame folks for being upset and feeling betrayed with the premature departure of Weber State's football coach, John L. Smith? But the Standard-Examiner's "Our View" commentary chastising Smith for taking an $850K a year job over a puny $130K a year position makes me laugh (Apr. 26, "Smith hightails it out of town"). Hey, for $850K a year, I'd give my employer a ten minute notice and walk naked to Arkansas!

Many sports more dangerous than hunting

With another hunting season quickly coming to an end, here's an FYI for all those save-the-world souls who believe that guns are evil and hunting is dangerous. Data shows that hunting with firearms ranks third in safety when compared to 28 other recreational pursuits, ranging from baseball to wrestling, a safety level bettered only by camping and billiards. To put things into perspective, compared to hunting a person is: 11 times more likely to be injured playing volleyball; 19 times more likely than snowboarding; 25 times more likely for injuries with bicycle riding, and 105 time more likely to be injured than cheerleading of playing football (source, Consumer Products Safety Commission and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
