Kotchman and Pena are candidates at first base for Indians

CLEVELAND -- Will it be Carlos Pena? What about Casey Kotchman? How about neither. Matt LaPorta is still in the picture, and there's always Carlos Santana, at least part time.

So who will open the season at first base for the Indians? Nobody knows, and that includes General Manager Chris Antonetti, the man in charge of stocking the roster.

Belcher finally sends 9/11 letter almost 10 years in the making

CHICAGO -- Tim Belcher figured that nine years and 363 days was long enough.

So on Friday, two days before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, the Indians' pitching coach asked his wife to send the eight-page letter, which he had carefully crafted for almost a decade, to his children. They are the reason he began the project in the first place.

TV bulletin of trade jars Jimenez

CLEVELAND -- When a pitcher is about to be traded, he is pulled back from his start to avoid the possibility of an injury.

Not so Ubaldo Jimenez, who accidentally learned the Rockies were trading him to the Indians a half-hour before he was scheduled to warm up for his start against the Padres on Saturday night.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Cleveland Indians have one player with the title of designated hitter, but who knows how many others will fill that job on a part-time basis?

Travis Hafner is the Tribe's DH, has been for years. He doesn't do anything else. In that respect, he might be part of a dying breed. Manager Manny Acta thinks that teams are moving away from players who do nothing but hit.

Time for baseball to shorten its season

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Major League Baseball has responded to the embarrassing sight of its showcase event being played in rain, sleet and 30-degree temperatures by trimming an off day from this year's league championship series.
