WSU names Bass assistant AD for support services

OGDEN -- Weber State University athletics director Jerry Bovee announced this week that Joel Bass has been named assistant athletic director for support services/head athletics trainer.

Bass has been with the Weber State athletic department for the past 20 years.

"Joel has been a big part of our athletic department and has served us well as the head athletics trainer for many years," Bovee said. "Creating this position of an assistant athletic director for support services will allow us to have athletic training, strength & conditioning, and equipment under the umbrella of support services on an administrative level."

This season marks the 21st season for Bass as the head athletics trainer at Weber State. He is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and a licensed athletic trainer in Utah. He has been an active force in the better treatment of high school, collegiate and professional athletes.

Ogden Mustangs drop pair of road games

After opening the season with six straight home games, the Ogden Mustangs hit the road last weekend for the first time to face the Idaho Steelheads twice.

"It's fun to have a bus trip, stay in a hotel and just be together as a team," said Ogden coach Devin Firl. "It's really a good experience for the guys to bond together. On the road you can play a little grittier and a lot of the pressure is off. It was definitely a good time for us to get on the road."

Remembering the man behind the trails

Ogden City pushed some popular hiking trails out of the way in order to build the water tanks near Strong's Canyon in South Ogden, but the map at the 36th Street trailhead offers no indication of who rerouted them.

Dave Stuart, a volunteer on the trails, posted the answer at the 36th and 29th Street trailheads after it was published in the newspaper. It was an obituary for Gilbert "Gib" Wallace, a man who shaped many of the trails in Ogden.

Wallace retired early from a career as a civil engineer with the Bureau of Reclamation, during which he worked on both Pineview and Causey dams. When the city of Ogden asked him to improve a trail near Mount Ogden Park, he threw his enthusiasm into full-time volunteer work.

GAME DAY: Monster Energy Supercross hits Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY -- Just two races remain in the 2011 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, and the competition is tighter than its even been in the history of the sport. Coming into Saturday's 16th stop of the season from Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, four riders sit within nine points of the championship lead and are well within striking distance to claim the coveted title.

Monster Energy Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto is the rider the rest of the field is looking up at in the standings. With five wins to his credit and an impressive finishing average of 2.9 that is top in the class, on paper Villopoto looks like the rider to beat and has been for the majority of the season. With a solid outing at his home race in Seattle two weeks ago, Villopoto will look to maintain his consistency while also aiming for the top of the box, putting additional pressure on his rivals.

'Cats finish club hockey season with pair of losses

LAS VEGAS -- The Weber State hockey club appeared to be blinded by the bright lights of Las Vegas last weekend, dropping its final two games of the 2010-11 season.

WSU lost the high-scoring games to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Friday, the 'Cats were trampled by the Rebels 14-5, and although they put forth a valiant effort on Saturday, the 'Cats fell to the Rebels 11-6.
