Lobbyist funds seem like outright bribes

I read in the paper that Utah's U.S. Senator Mike Lee was unsuccessful in his plan to run his own super PAC that would allow him to accept no limit on how much money a donor could contribute (Dec. 2, "Federal election Commission nixes Lee's super PAC funds"). I hope that decision sticks and that Senator Lee and his staff do not figure out how to do an end run and get their way.

Democrats support the common man

(UNEDITED) Years ago, a friend told me that he was told that he was only a Democrat because FDR brought the Social Security Act into existence. My friend said that was plenty of reason for him to be a Democrat. My maternal grandfather, Roscoe Boden, was elected to six out of eight terms as a Democrat in the 40's, 50's and 60's - three times as a Salt Lake County Commissioner and three times as Salt Lake County Surveyor. Grandad was smart, honest and had great common sense, so that was enough for me to be a Democrat. Grandad's philosophy was that the Democrats were always more for the common man and not the ultra rich. Not much has changed since the 40's, 50s and 60's.

Republicans don't really have solutions

(UNEDITED) The Republicans say that to raise the minimum tax rate for Americans making more than one million dollars a year is nothing more than "class warfare". That is truly brilliant on the Republicans' part - business as usual - and they are dead wrong. The "class warfare" is what is going on now and has been for many years. As Warren Buffet said, it is not right that his secretary pays more in taxes than he does. This is wrong, wrong, wrong.

Sex mentioned on art piece 'much ado about nothing'

My wife and I attended the North Ogden Arts Festival for the first time On Saturday, August 13. We looked at the exhibits, had our caricatures drawn with our dog and listened to a young female singer who sounded like Taylor Swift but better. There was a nice crowd there on an early, windy morning.

As to the word "sex" on a piece of artwork at the festival, it is much ado about nothing. Let's see, when our kids go to school, one of the questions asked on the registration form is "what sex are you?" On a drivers license, your sex is indicated by an "M" or an "F". My wife and dog being of the female sex and I being of the male sex are looking forward to attending the festival again next year.

Exploding fireworks go on past midnight

Congratulations to the members of our Utah State Legislature. Once again they have removed any doubt about their infinite lack of common sense by allowing powerful fireworks to be used over a longer period of time in July. If you have any doubts, let me give you a few thoughts.

Wall Street lobbyists may keep big shots out of jail

I don't know what all the fuss is about with Wall Street giving their employees their huge bonuses this year. They said it would be about 4% higher than last year. You know, it takes seasoned employees to figure out how to screw the American public as bad as they do.

"Get Low" could be Duvall's best performance

The Standard-Examiner's movie critic, Steve Salles, said he thought Robert Duvall gave one of his best performances in the movie, "Get Low" (Aug. 27, "Duvall better get Oscar nod for 'Get Low'"). I'll go even further and say it was Robert Duvall's best performance of his long and distinguished career.

Americans' beliefs about Obama are baffling

The media reports that there is still a fair percentage of members in our adult public who believe President Obama is a Muslim and was not born in the United States.

Fireworks noise creates undue stress for pets

President John Adams is given credit for saying that every July 4th, our nation should celebrate with parades and fireworks. Mr. Adams probably didn't own a dog, or he surely would have said parades, but no fireworks.

Sheriff Slater thanked for great service

Next year there will be a new sheriff in town. The old one, Sheriff Brad Slater (he is not really old), has decided to retire after 12 years as the top law enforcement officer of Weber County.

When I first met Sheriff Slater, I came away thinking I wouldn't mind being stuck with him on a small fishing boat. He has a great sense of humor, he's smart and there is not a scintilla of arrogance in him.
