Sheepdogs and their handlers strut their stuff in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE -- The sheep may be taller, outweigh and outnumber the border collies, but don't tell the border collies.

One border collie after another scampered across 12 acres at Kelley Creek Farm Saturday, each herding four head of sheep through panels to see who was top dog.

75th Air Base Wing welcomes new leader during trying times

HILL AIR FORCE BASE -- The new "mayor" of Hill Air Force Base will step into her new assignment with a requirement to do more with less.

On Thursday, in a ceremony in one of the base's aircraft hangars, Col. Sarah Zabel assumed command of the 75th Air Base Wing from Col. Patrick Higby, who will be headed to Washington, D.C., for a new position with the White House Communications Agency.

Ducklings get their day in court ­- in a cardboard box

FARMINGTON -- The Davis County Memorial Courthouse is no place for ducks.

Just the same, two ducklings recently took up temporary residence there, with each laying claim to its own deep courthouse window well just outside the Davis County Commission's office.

UDOT to repave Main Street in Layton, Clearfield

LAYTON -- For the next three weeks, you shouldn't see any cars parked along Main Street in Layton and Clearfield.

The Utah Department of Transportation has begun a project to repave Main Street in Layton and Clearfield between Church Street in Layton and 300 North in Clearfield.

LAYTON -- Layton city officials want to make voting easier for the upcoming municipal elections, so they are making some changes.

Layton is one of 13 Davis County cities that will not only use county electronic equipment for the election, but will also contract with the county for Election Day services.

LAYTON -- Six-year-old Adam Harding would not shift his focus from the old VCR machine he was disassembling. Steadily, he turned the screwdriver to loosen a screw so he could remove another part from the old appliance.

Five Davis entities consider raising taxes

FRUIT HEIGHT -- Two more Davis cities are looking at the possibility of raising property taxes for fiscal year 2011-12 to provide basic services.

The Fruit Heights City Council is considering a 3 percent to 8 percent property tax increase in its upcoming budget to generate more dollars for daily operations, while Woods Cross city officials are considering a 34 percent tax increase to hire an additional police officer, officials say.

Hospital: More time needed to restore Hauck's competency

FARMINGTON -- Even though Jeremy Jacob Hauck is being forced to take medication, it may not be enough to restore his mental competency, his attorney said.

Hauck, now 22, is at Utah State Hospital, where he has been since January 2008. He was not present for Monday's hearing in 2nd District Court. He is charged with first-degree murder in the 2006 death of his mother, Laura Hauck.

FARMINGTON -- A North Logan woman has entered two guilty pleas to second-degree felony charges of trying to harm her two toddlers.

CLEARFIELD -- The Top of Utah is getting a new paint job, just in time for summer.

Over the next few weeks, Utah Department of Transportation will undertake a massive repainting project in Davis and Weber counties, repainting crosswalks and road striping in eight Top of Utah cities.

FARMINGTON -- Adding value to what the Legacy Events Center already offers visitors will take a vendor who has good taste in concessionary food.

"We are seeking bids from vendors to run our concessions operation at the Legacy Events Center," said Dave Hansen, center director.

Davis County has issued a request for proposals in seeking a concessionaire who can manage, operate and maintain the concession operation in the center at 151 S.

Gift shop founded by Kaysville artist to close

KAYSVILLE -- LeConte Stewart needed a place to sell his paintings, so he opened his own store 70 years ago. At the end of this month, that store will close.

Stewart's Gift Shop, 151 N. Main St., still sells LeConte's work, along with jewelry, keepsakes, blessing outfits and a lot more, so much more that the store has gained quite a following.
