Roger That: Bannister relives mile milestone

OXFORD, England -- Roger Bannister remembers those fabled four minutes as if they were yesterday.

Arrival of 2012 heralds year of London Olympics

LONDON-- When Big Ben strikes 12 to ring in the New Year, no one will feel the level of anticipation -- and pressure -- more than organizers of the London Olympics.

With the arrival of 2012, the preparations will no longer be for "next year's games."

The Olympics will be THIS year, less than seven months away -- exactly 209 days from Jan. 1 until the opening ceremony on July 27.

Track VP sees no prospect of U.S. hosting worlds

LONDON -- The IAAF's top-ranking American sees no prospect of the United States hosting track and field's world championships, an event yet to be held in the country that traditionally produces big stars and dominates the medal count.

"We just don't have the wherewithal, starting with the fact that there is no stadium that exists that could accommodate it," Bob Hersh, the senior vice president of the International Association of Athletics Federations, said Tuesday in an interview with The Associated Press.

Panel to probe possible boxing fix for 2012 Games

LONDON -- Denying corruption claims in the "strongest possible terms," amateur boxing's governing body set up a special committee Friday to investigate allegations of attempts to fix results at the 2012 London Olympics.

The International Amateur Boxing Association said a five-man panel will look into claims made in a BBC television program that $9 million has been paid by Azerbaijan to ensure the former Soviet republic wins two gold medals at the games.

Bribes were allegedly paid to the World Series of Boxing, a subsidiary of AIBA.

6 cities lodge bids for 2020 Olympics

LONDON -- Six cities from Europe, Asia and the Middle East are competing to host the 2020 Olympics.

Submitting bids to the International Olympic Committee by Friday's deadline were Rome; Madrid; Tokyo; Istanbul; Doha, Qatar; and Baku, Azerbaijan.

There were no surprises, as all six cities had previously announced their candidacies.

USOC, IOC optimistic of reaching revenue deal

LONDON -- U.S. and international Olympic leaders made substantial progress Friday toward a new revenue-sharing agreement that they hope to complete in the next few weeks, officials from both sides told The Associated Press.

U.S. Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun said he would not rule out an American bid for the 2020 Olympics if a deal is signed soon, although time is running out and chances remain slim.

Rogge would be 'delighted' by US 2020 bid

DURBAN, South Africa -- IOC President Jacques Rogge said Saturday he would be "delighted" if the United States decides to bid for the 2020 Olympics despite the stinging rejection of American cities in the race for two previous Summer Games.

New York failed in its bid for the 2012 Games and Chicago was eliminated in the first round for the 2016 Olympics, despite the appearance of President Barack Obama in Copenhagen for the vote in 2009.

DURBAN, South Africa -- Persistence paid off for the South Korean city of Pyeongchang.

After a decade of trying and two defeats, it won the right to host an Olympics -- the 2018 Winter Games -- beating two European rivals Wednesday in a landslide vote.

"Koreans have been waiting for 10 years to host the Winter Games," bid leader Cho Yang-ho said. "Now we have finally achieved our dream."

Frantic lobbying day before vote for 2018 Olympics

DURBAN, South Africa -- In a frantic final day of campaigning, the three cities vying for the 2018 Winter Olympics lobbied for votes Tuesday in what shapes up as a choice between the third-time Asian bid from South Korea and the European challenger from Germany.

The International Olympic Committee will vote by secret ballot Wednesday, choosing from among the Korean resort of Pyeongchang, the Bavarian capital of Munich and the French lakeside town of Annecy.

Pyeongchang, bidding for a third successive time after close defeats for the 2010 and 2014 Games, remains the city to beat. Munich, hoping to become first city to host both a Summer and Winter Olympics, is pushing hard. Annecy is the outsider.

Progress on revenue talks could encourage U.S. bid

LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- A day after securing a $4.38 billion deal with NBC, the IOC inched closer toward a new revenue-sharing agreement with U.S. Olympic leaders Wednesday that could open the way for an American bid for the 2020 Games.

The International Olympic Committee and USOC reported progress in their latest round of talks aimed at resolving a long-running dispute over revenue sharing that contributed to stinging defeats for New York for the 2012 Games and Chicago for 2016.

"It went very well," IOC marketing commission chairman Gerhard Heiberg told The Associated Press. "It was a very positive atmosphere. We are getting closer and closer. We are down to small points. It's still our hope that before too long we should be there."

NBC retains Olympic rights for 4 games

LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- The IOC says NBC has retained its hold on U.S. Olympic television rights by defeating rival bids from ESPN and FOX and securing a four-games deal through 2020 worth nearly $4.4 billion.

NBC won the bid less than a month after the resignation of longtime sports and Olympics chief Dick Ebersol in a dispute with the new owners from Comcast. The victory extends NBC's reign as the Olympic network in the United States, a period stretching back 20 years.

The decision was announced officially by International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge at a news conference with Comcast chief executive Brian Roberts, new NBC sports chairman Mark Lazarus and other executives.

NBC now will have exclusive rights to the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, as well as the 2018 Winter Games and 2020 Olympics, whose sites have not yet been chosen.

IOC issues report on 2018 Winter Games bid cities

LONDON -- The three cities vying for the 2018 Winter Olympics found reason for celebration Tuesday after the IOC issued a report evaluating their bid plans less than two months before the vote.

Pyeongchang, bidding for a third straight time, received a generally glowing assessment from the International Olympic Committee's evaluation commission, bolstering the South Korean city's status as front-runner.

Sources: June 6-7 set for Olympic TV bidding

LONDON -- The IOC has invited U.S. networks to Switzerland on June 6-7 to bid on the next set of multi-billion dollar Olympic television rights, Olympic officials told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Network executives will travel to International Olympic Committee headquarters in Lausanne to make presentations and submit sealed offers for rights to the 2014 and 2016 Games, with the option of seeking a four-games package through 2020.
