Ex-Dolphins bust John Beck faces former team

MIAMI -- Ah, the memories. John Beck's rookie season with the Miami Dolphins stirs images of bumbling, stumbling, fumbling and losing, lots of losing.

When he backpedaled, the entire offense would follow suit. In four starts, all defeats, Beck failed to lead his team to a single touchdown. He tripped and fell for a sack. One especially hapless fumble was returned for a score. Fans jeered and stand-up comedians poked fun until a merciful demotion sent Beck to the bench as a bust.

But there must also be some fond memories of playing in Miami, right, John?

NCAA confirms investigation at Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla.  — The NCAA said Wednesday it has been investigating the relationship between a convicted Ponzi scheme artist and the University of Miami for five months, and the allegations — if true — show the need for “serious and fundamental change” in college sports.

Former booster Nevin Shapiro, now serving 20 years in federal prison, claims he treated players with sex parties, nightclub outings, cars and other gifts. Shapiro told Yahoo! Sports he provided improper benefits to 72 football players and other athletes at Miami from 2002 to 2010.

“If the assertions are true, the alleged conduct at the University of Miami is an illustration of the need for serious and fundamental change in many critical aspects of college sports,” NCAA president Mark Emmert said in a statement.

Uncle Mo big favorite in 3-year-old debut

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. -- Leading Kentucky Derby contender Uncle Mo has been a model of comportment these past few months while waiting for his next race.

The colt willingly works out, knows when it's time for feed and rarely raises a fuss.

"He's like a big puppy dog in the stall," owner Mike Repole says.

And on the race track?

Rooney tries to escape brother's shadow

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida -- As John Rooney walks out onto the beach by his hotel, his sunburned neck is already redder than a Manchester United jersey, which can happen when an Englishman comes to Florida to escape the shadow of his famous brother.

A newcomer to the United States, Rooney took part in a five-day Major League Soccer training camp that ended on Tuesday. He has signed a contract with the league and hopes to be taken in the first round of the SuperDraft on Thursday.

Rooney's oldest brother, Wayne, is the star striker for United, a hero and villain who in recent months has been lambasted by the British media, jeered by fans and burned in effigy. John is a 20-year-old midfielder trying to carve out a career, and after playing in the lower leagues back home, he decided to come to the United States.

Luck leads Cardinal past Hokies

MIAMI -- John Elway flashed his familiar grin and Jim Harbaugh gave a jubilant shout from the sideline as Andrew Luck sprinted up the field to join an end zone celebration.

Nearly a quarter remained in the Orange Bowl, but the Stanford Cardinal were on the way to their first bowl victory in 14 years. And it was a blowout.

Luck, the Heisman Trophy runner-up, threw for 287 yards and four touchdowns Monday night to lead fifth-ranked Stanford past No. 12 Virginia Tech 40-12.

Patrick not panicking just yet

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- With a handshake as firm as a wrench, Danica Patrick greets a guest, then quickly takes a seat on the couch in her 18th-floor hotel suite.

Henne to be busy during preseason

DAVIE, Fla. -- Traffic can get heavy around the Miami Dolphins complex, which is an annoyance for Chad Henne as he comes and goes at training camp.

"I'm not a road rager," the Dolphins' backup quarterback says. "But I'm not a very patient person."
Henne also has someone in his way at work, where he's stuck behind last year's NFL Comeback Player of the Year, Chad Pennington. Henne threw only 12 passes in his rookie season last year, and barring a calamity at quarterback, he'll ride the bench again in 2009.
"I think it's hard for anybody just to sit," Henne says. "I played four years at Michigan. I never sat on the bench. But I'm learning and getting better."

Singer Marc Anthony to team up with Miami Dolphins

MIAMI -- Marc Anthony is the latest celebrity musician to join forces with the Miami Dolphins.

The team scheduled a news conference to be held Tuesday in New York for a "major corporate announcement" with Anthony.
It was unclear whether Anthony will become a minority owner. That's what happened last month when singer Gloria Estefan and her husband, producer Emilio Estefan, bought a small stake in the team.
New Dolphins owner Stephen Ross also began a partnership in May with Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville enterprise, which includes Land Shark Lager. Buffett has yet to accept Ross' invitation to become a minority owner, but the Dolphins' stadium has been renamed Land Shark Stadium for this season. Buffett has also written a song for the team.
