Man United and Ferguson taking City seriously

LONDON -- Manchester City has already won one major battle ahead of Monday's Premier League derby: convincing Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson that it is a force to be taken seriously.

Real Madrid, Barcelona top football's rich list

LONDON -- Real Madrid and Barcelona are football's biggest moneymakers for the third straight year and look set to out-earn their rivals for the foreseeable future.

The annual review of football finance by Deloitte shows Madrid topping the list for the seventh straight year with revenue of 479.5 million ($636.5 million) to the year ending June 30, an increase of 9 percent on the previous 12 months.

English champion Manchester United was again in third place with (euro) 367 million ($487.2 million), the highest of four English clubs in the top 10 earners. Bayern Munich was fourth with (euro) 321.4 million ($426.6 million), with Arsenal, Chelsea, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Liverpool and Schalke next.

Premier League spends 72 million pounds on agents

LONDON -- England's 20 Premier League clubs paid almost 72 million pounds ($113 million) to players' agents over a one-year period, with Manchester City spending 13 percent of the total.

The league said Wednesday that City paid 9.7 million pounds ($15.3 million) to agents from Oct. 1, 2010, to Sept. 30, 2011, a period that covers two transfer windows. City's total is close to three times the average spent per team -- 3.6 million pounds ($5.7 million).

Olympic host city under scrutiny amid London riots

LONDON -- A few miles from the worst violence to hit the city in 25 years, beach volleyball players dived headlong in the sand, the most summery of Olympic sports on display less than a year before the London Games.

The matches were played under the shadow of the London Eye big wheel, and not far from Buckingham Palace and No. 10 Downing Street. Yet no historic backdrop could block the images of rioting and looting that have swept the city the past three days and left a mark on British sports.

Thierry Henry: Salary cap keeps MLS behind Europe

LONDON -- Thierry Henry says Major League Soccer will not attract players from Europe while they are at the peak of their careers as long as teams are forced to operate under a salary cap.

The former France striker joined New York Red Bulls last year from Barcelona but, like David Beckham, only switched to the United States when he was well into his 30s as a so-called Designated Player.

Sports cheats relax! News of the World is no more

LONDON -- Unfaithful soccer stars and crooked cricketers will soon be safe from the most prying of Britain's muckraking tabloids.

The News of the World goes on sale for the last time Sunday, shut down by its proprietor after 168 years. The Murdoch-owned News International is trying to limit the fallout of allegations that reporters illegally tapped cell phones and bribed police.

Among those who will not be mourning the loss of Britain's best-selling Sunday newspaper will be the many sports figures targeted by sting operations.

Emotions high before 2018 Ryder Cup venue awarded

LONDON -- The site of the 2018 Ryder Cup will be announced Tuesday, with many players and fans hoping European golf officials will honor Seve Ballesteros by sending the event to Spain.

The five-time major winner died this month following a three-year struggle against the effects of a brain tumor. Ballesteros' family is among those suggesting that Tres Cantos, north of Madrid, should win out over bids from France, Germany, the Netherlands and Portugal.

"It would be the greatest tribute to him," Baldomero Ballesteros said at his brother's funeral last week. "I appeal to the sensitivity of the Ryder Cup Committee of the European Tour to agree the greatest honor that could be bestowed on Seve is to award the competition to Spain. I appeal on behalf of the family."

LONDON -- David Beckham could complete his loan move to Tottenham from the Los Angeles Galaxy over the weekend.

"He could be here on Sunday possibly, if what I'm being told on the grapevine is right," Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said Friday. "The clubs are talking and there is a good chance it will happen."

Redknapp, who said last week that he hoped to sign the former England captain on a two-month loan from the Galaxy, said Beckham is likely to attend the north London club's FA Cup match against Charlton on Sunday.

LONDON -- Real Madrid and Barcelona are again the biggest moneymakers in world football.

The Spanish rivals took first and second place in Deloitte's annual study of the sport's finances, with English champion Manchester United slipping a place to third because of the weakness of the British pound rather than its 716.5 million-pound (790 million; $1.07 billion) debt.
