Brady Ellison keeps on winning in archery

GUADALAJARA, Mexico -- American archer Brady Ellison had a bad day at the Pan American Games, and it was still good enough for gold.

The world's top-ranked archer overcame a sub-par performance to defeat Crispin Duenas of Canada on Saturday, capping a nearly perfect year and showing he remains the world's most dominant shooter.

"I was just a little bit off, maybe a just a bit weak in my shot," the 22-year-old Ellison said. "It's archery, sometimes the body is just different. But I shot good on the arrows that I needed to shoot well to win the match."

2014 World Cup kicks off, qualifying groups drawn

RIO DE JANEIRO -- World champion Spain was drawn on Saturday with 1998 winner France, Georgia, Belarus and Finland in a qualifying group for the 2014 tournament -- the first World Cup in Brazil in 64 years.

Officially kicking off proceedings for the event, the draw placed England with 2012 European Championship co-hosts Ukraine and Poland in Group H. Italy will meet Denmark and the Czech Republic in Group B, while Germany faces Sweden, Austria and Ireland in Group C.

Spain and England were the final two teams to find out their qualifying opponents in the draw, and either one had a chance to end up in France's group.

Castroneves looking to start over at Sao Paulo 300

SAO PAULO -- Helio Castroneves feels like he needs to start over after a dismal beginning to his 2011 IndyCar season and Sunday's Sao Paulo 300 may be the perfect place for him to turn things around.

Nothing has gone right for Castroneves this season. The three-time Indy 500 winner is only 14th in the drivers' standings and has not been able to finish higher than seventh in the first three races. He crashed twice, on one occasion knocking a teammate out of contention in the process.

Franchitti looking to improve despite solid start

SAO PAULO -- Dario Franchitti is not entirely pleased with his start to the IndyCar season despite having the lead in the drivers' standings going into Sunday's Sao Paulo 300.

Franchitti began defense of his IndyCar series title with a victory and two podium finishes ahead of Sunday's race in the streets of South America's biggest city. Still, the Scot feels he needs to improve on his performance to be competitive the rest of the year and remain in position to win his third straight championship.

Rio residents: Olympic projects violating rights

SAO PAULO -- Residents of three Rio de Janeiro slums say their human rights are being violated to make way for construction projects linked to the 2016 Olympics.

Slum leaders have filed a complaint with the Organization of American States, saying that local authorities are arbitrarily relocating them to build transit systems needed for the games.

The complaint, obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press, says nearly 300 families already have been removed from their homes because of the construction of two bus systems that are expected to ease Rio's traffic jams during the Olympics and the 2014 World Cup.

Report: Brazil needs faster upgrades for 2014 World Cup

SAO PAULO -- Brazil needs to improve the pace of upgrades to airports, infrastructure and stadiums before the 2014 World Cup, according to a report from a government watchdog group.

The Brazilian Audit Court criticized officials for missing deadlines, not controlling costs and a lack of transparency in their work. The Audit Court is responsible for overseeing how the Brazilian government spends public money.

Brazil's World Cup organizing committee said in an e-mail on Friday that it had no comment at this time on the report.

Ronaldo announces retirement from football

SAO PAULO -- There was finally an opponent Ronaldo couldn't overcome -- his own body.

No longer able to meet the demands of football because he can't stay fit anymore, Ronaldo announced Monday that he is retiring, ending a stellar 18-year career in which he won two World Cup titles with Brazil and thrived with some of Europe's top clubs.

"It's very hard to leave something that made me so happy," a tearful Ronaldo said. "Mentally I wanted to continue, but I have to acknowledge that I lost (the fight) to my body."

Gremio: Ronaldinho set to end contract with Milan

SAO PAULO -- Ronaldinho is set to end his contract with AC Milan on Wednesday, clearing the way for his return to his native Gremio, the Brazilian club said.

Report: Ronaldinho may end 10-year stint in Europe

SAO PAULO -- Ronaldinho is reportedly negotiating a return to Brazil from AC Milan, with three top clubs lining up to sign him.

The 30-year-old Ronaldinho is in Brazil and his brother and agent Roberto Assis said Flamengo, Gremio and Palmeiras are trying to sign the player. Assis told GloboEsporte.com on Sunday that a deal is expected within a few days.

Brazil president warns of problems ahead of World Cup

SAO PAULO -- Brazil's president says preparations for the 2014 World Cup could be jeopardized if government officials and businessmen fail to work together in the coming years.
