CLEARFIELD — The smell of smoke drew Mareke Watson and her family from their house.

That’s when the 18-year-old and her parents, Julie and Alan, saw flames engulfing the back of a neighbor’s house. The fire at Edilberto and Nelda Castillo’s home started in the garage and was spreading to the back of the house when Mareke and her family noted it.

CLEARFIELD — When Eneida Magana found an infant, who was not breathing and had no heartbeat, collapsed on a pool deck, she knew she needed to immediately start CPR.

As part of the 16th Annual Lifeguard Games, Magana was only role-playing — this time. She and her teammate were asked to demonstrate the proper steps in saving the life of an infant. They were scored on their knowledge and application during the test.

Nicole Roundy is a 26-year-old adaptive snowboarder who hopes to qualify for the 2014 Paralympics. She is trying to raise money for a new $5,000 prosthetic knee, as well as help her pay for training and travel costs.

Alife-altering battle with cancer as a child only made Nicole Roundy more determined to reach for her dreams.

Now, as a 26-year-old, she is attempt ng to fulfill the pinnacle of her sporting dreams by participating in the 2014 Paralympics.

Roundy, who is an adaptive snowboarder, has been competing and winning events for some time. Until recently, however, snowboarding was not a recognized Paralympics sport. Now, she learned there is a chance for her to participate in the 2014 games.
