Prokhorov meets Williams, believes Nets will win

NEW YORK -- New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov met with Deron Williams to discuss his future with the NBA team, but the Russian tycoon refused to say whether the All-Star guard gave any indication whether he would stay with the club after this season.

Jazz whip the Nets in Newark

NEWARK, N.J. -- Fighting for one of the last playoffs spot in the Western Conference, the Utah Jazz couldn't afford to be tired a day after losing a four-overtime game in Atlanta.

Paul Millsap had 24 points and 13 rebounds, Al Jefferson added 19 points and eight rebounds and the Jazz shook off the disappointment and fatigue from the night before to beat the Nets 105-84 Monday night.

"I felt I was ready to play," Jefferson said. "That game was tough, but we lost and it left a bad taste in my mouth. The way we could get over that game was to come and win this one, and I think that's what we did."

Giants beat Cowboys to reach playoffs

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Victor Cruz and Eli Manning have the New York Giants dancing to the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

Manning threw three touchdown passes, including a 74-yarder to Cruz early, and the Giants (9-7) won an all-or-nothing game to claim the final spot in the NFL playoffs, beating the Dallas Cowboys 31-14 on Sunday night.

The loss left Jerry Jones' Cowboys (8-8) out of the playoffs for the second straight year.

Broad Bahn wins $1.5 million Hambletonian

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Hambletonian Day belonged to driver George Brennan and a couple of trotters who provided a few surprises on the biggest day in harness racing.

Brennan guided Broad Bahn to a pace-setting 3 1/4-length victory in the $1.5 million Hambletonian for colts and geldings. His trip to the winner's circle Saturday came a little more than a half hour after the driver piloted long-shot Bold and Fresh to an upset in the $750,000 Hambletonian Oaks for fillies.

Brennan is the second driver to win the Oaks and Hambletonian on the same day. Brian Sears did it two years ago with Broadway Schooner in the Oaks and Muscle Hill in the Hambletonian.

Ivy League to limit full-contact football workouts

NEWARK, N.J. -- In an effort to reduce the number of concussions and subconcussive hits, Ivy League football teams will be allowed to have just two full-contact practices a week, three less than the NCAA allows.

The league announced Wednesday that the presidents of its eight schools have accepted a series of recommendations made by a special committee that put the Ivy League in a leadership role in trying to limit concussive hits in football.

Nets' Kris Humphries quiet on upcoming free agency

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- With the NBA on the eve of a potential lockout, New Jersey Nets forward Kris Humphries didn't want to talk about his upcoming free agency.

Reality television. Fiancee Kim Kardashian. A change of agents. They also were out of bounds for the NBA's fifth-leading rebounder this past season.

Creamer not satisfied being 11th in women's golf

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Paula Creamer came to the ShopRite LPGA Classic a year ago wondering whether her surgically repaired left thumb would hold up for three days of play.

Her outlook on golf is much different these days, and it starts when she walks into her kitchen in Orlando.

Sitting on the table and serving as its centerpiece is the U.S. Women's Open trophy, the major that Creamer won shortly after returning to the LPGA Tour.

Nets PG Deron Williams to have right wrist surgery; his season is over

NEWARK, N.J. -- New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams is having wrist surgery and will miss the final week of the season.

The two-time All Star will have bone fragments and scar tissue removed from his right wrist in an operation on Friday afternoon, coach Avery Johnson said.

Johnson said power forward Kris Humphries, the league's fifth leading rebounder (10.4), is going to miss the last four games because of ankle and heel injuries in his right foot.

Devils' 13-year playoff run in serious jeopardy

NEWARK, N.J. -- For the past 16-plus seasons, playing hockey has been fun for New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur.

It was a sport he loved to play. He earned a bundle of money doing it, and the Devils always were a threat to win it all.
