Financial responsibility, Obama-style

Get this: President Obama has proclaimed April as National Financial Capability Month.

After all, who better than Obama — who has added $6 trillion to the national debt so far — to help "every individual take ownership of his or her financial future"?

Say it aint Joe

Maybe he's just what America needs. Then again, maybe not.

The joke’s on men

The economy is in tatters and folks are sour. Thank goodness there’s always one thing to cheer us up: male bashing.

C’est la vie, America!

Bonjour, America! It was a great week, no? President Obama has won a second term. The transformation into a French-style democratic model shall commence!Comment allez-vous? You are not doing so well? Be happy, my friends!

Big bird

An interview with Big Bird

A butler opens the door of the large Sesame Street brownstone and guides me to the parlor. Big Bird is sitting on a large couch, wearing a silk smoking jacket, holding a bourbon and enjoying a drag on what appears to be an unfiltered Camel cigarette.

What about the War on Men?

"Lots of people are talking about the ‘war on women’ these days, but what about the war on men?"

Time to police the government

The balance between the police and the policed is getting way out of whack -- and we better restore it now.

I speak of a spate of new technologies -- high-tech cameras, satellites and now, drones being flown over U.S. soil -- that are giving police and government way too much power over the average Joe.

Unfortunate reality (TV)

"Do you know what I want to be when I grow up, Daddy?"

"I am so proud of my little girl. You want to be a doctor? Or maybe a medical researcher?"

"Don’t be silly, Daddy. I want to be a reality-TV star."

Fat president, lean government?

A week ago, Los Angeles Times editors asked readers if New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has the look of a president.

"Is America ready for a president who, frankly, doesn't look healthy?" they asked.

Sheesh! You'd think corpulent Americans might catch a break in these sensitive times.

For Father's Day -- Blue Ribbon Dads

My father worked hard to support six children -- to send us to private school, contribute to our college costs and pay for all five of his daughters' weddings.

I wouldn't know it for many years, but our neighbor worked three jobs much of his adult life; he wouldn't buy his first new car until he retired.

Tax-time miseries

Boy, are accountants going through a rough patch now -- even rougher than we taxpayers are.

Despite software that has greatly simplified tax preparation, American accountants suffer a host of daily aggravations.

Needed -- plain English

"Your query poses prospective considerations," said the bureaucrat, "that rise above and beyond the level of considerations that the voter-taxpayer may be prepared to rise above and beyond."

"Huh?" I said to his interpreter.

"He said it's best the public doesn't learn the real reason," said the interpreter.
